Velocity Creatives and Award-winning Indie Film Producer Javier Gonzalez to Bring Deborah Sampson's Story to Life in Feature Film Rebel
Winner of the 2018 Artemis Women In Action Festival's Best Screenplay and Official Selection at Beverly Hills Film Festival (2019) and Catalina Film Festival (2018) to be made into feature film.
BROOKLYN, N.Y., Aug. 22, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Velocity Creatives, a full-service film and photography production company, announced the production of its first-ever feature film, Rebel, based on the true story of Deborah Sampson, the first American woman soldier.
In 1782, at the age of 22, Deborah Sampson disguised herself as a man, joined the Continental Army, and fought in the American Revolutionary War against the British. Her gender undiscovered, she lived with the men at West Point for two years, fought in several battles, and received high honors for her service.
Rebel has already received accolades from the independent film industry: the 2018 Artemis Women In Action Festival's Best Screenplay Award, and an Official Selection at the Beverly Hills Film Festival, as well as the Catalina Film Festival.
Screenplay writer Susan Cameron originally wrote Rebel over 15 years ago but tucked it away in a drawer. Back then, she received feedback that no one would be interested in a period piece about a woman. However, Cameron changed her mind a few years go, revisited it, and updated the script.
"Interest in women's stories has grown immensely over the last few years, and I believe the right time for this story is now," said Cameron. "It fills a gap in our history, where remarkable women are not adequately recognized."
Rebel's co-producer, Javier Gonzalez, has produced dozens of award-winning indie films in recent years: Swallow was at Tribeca, and This Teacher won LA Film Festival 2018.
"Javier has the ability to produce stories that are both subtle and compelling," said Schwan. "Sampson's narrative is a complex one. It's a coming of age story set against the passionate landscape of the notion of democracy and the birth of America. Javier is someone who could accurately bring Susan's script to life."
Filming is set to start in the spring of 2020.
