Tennis champion, entrepreneur and activist Venus Williams will share her unique insight into the fight for equal pay in both sports and business at the leadership conference aboard the USS Intrepid
NEW YORK, Oct. 11, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- American Banker, the premier business information resource for senior leaders in financial services, announced today that tennis champion and entrepreneur Venus Williams will join the program at THE MOST POWERFUL WOMEN IN BANKING conference in New York City on October 26, 2022. The leadership event, which will take place aboard the USS Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, is part of the 20th anniversary celebration of The Most Powerful Women in Banking program.
Williams will discuss her experiences fighting for equal pay in sports and business. She will be joined onstage by Ernie Johannson, Group Head of North American Personal & Business Banking at BMO Harris, and a 2022 honoree of The Most Powerful Women in Banking. Lorraine Hariton, President & CEO at Catalyst, Inc., a global nonprofit dedicated to building workplaces that work for women, will moderate the conversation.
When Venus Williams won her first championship at Wimbledon in 2000, she was paid substantially less than the men's champion that year. She spent the next seven years fighting for equal pay for women in tennis and in 2007 when she won her fourth Wimbledon championship, Williams became the first woman to earn equal prize money to her male counterpart. As the founder and driving force of lifestyle and activewear brand, EleVen, Williams continues to advocate for equal pay in business and in sports.
Now in its 20th year, The Most Powerful Women in Banking™ program from American Banker recognizes individuals and teams for demonstrating exceptional leadership skills, strong performance and a commitment to driving real outcomes for diversity, equity and inclusion in financial services. On October 26, 2022, for the first time ever THE MOST POWERFUL WOMEN IN BANKING conference will be an in-person event aboard the historic USS Intrepid aircraft carrier featuring inspiring discussions, executive networking and insightful panels on a range of leadership topics. Registration is open to the entire financial services community. The conference is part of a three-event celebration, which also includes an invite-only gala for program honorees and an invite-only awards dinner for The Most Powerful Women in Banking: NEXT initiative, which recognizes high-achieving executives ages 40 and under.
"Given her leadership in pay equity, it feels fitting that Venus Williams will speak at The Most Powerful Women in Banking conference during the 20th anniversary of the program," says Gemma Postlethwaite, CEO of Arizent, parent company of American Banker. "In addition to being one of history's greatest athletes, she is a tremendously successful businesswoman and advocate. Hearing her insights into what's needed to achieve pay equity is the inspiration our most powerful women need to shape the financial services community for the future."
