“The Nesting Tree”: a beautiful little book about a natural safe haven. “The Nesting Tree” is the creation of published author Virginnia Swenson, a former flight attendant for forty years with United Airlines who spent long layovers indulging in creative writing; she now lives on her parents’ farm with her sister and their dog and cats.
Swenson writes, “I am a tree.
I have a trunk.
I have limbs, and there are branches on my limbs.
The leaves protect the birds and are beautiful to see.
In the summer, the leaves hide the nests. In the winter, after all my leaves fall off, everyone can see how my nest friends live.
The squirrels live in my branches. Work, work as they go up and down and around my trunk. They crack the nuts and put the food in holes in my trunk. The squirrels are messy as they throw the shells to the ground all around my trunk.
Sometimes young children build nests in my branches. They call their nests a ‘tree house.’
Ouch, ouch, the children cry as they step on the sharp shells around my trunk.”
Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Virginnia Swenson’s new book is an invitation for young readers to appreciate the simple wonders of nature, identifying birds and squirrels and learning about how much fun can be had living next to a tree.
Told from the tree’s perspective, children will come to understand how a tree is truly its own ecosystem from looking at how the creatures interact with each other and the tree.
