Survey results from Virtual Vocations' annual Remote Work Week poll show career change is on the minds of professionals in 2023, even those who are mostly happy at work.
TUCSON, Ariz., May 3, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A new report from Virtual Vocations—a leading fully remote job board—provides previously unreleased data on career change and workers' interest in finding fresh careers for 2023. The company found that nearly half of workers would trade their jobs for new careers that are more flexible, including the opportunity to work from home 100% of the time.
Virtual Vocations site members and volunteers from the general public completed the "2023 Career Change Survey" from March 12 to 18. Released during the company's 8th annual Remote Work Week celebration event, the survey gathered career change opinions from 857 professionals in total. "Our survey asked workers to imagine whether changing careers would improve their professional happiness. Overwhelmingly, workers admitted they want new jobs in 2023, and that the possibility of fully remote work is pulling them toward change," said Virtual Vocations CEO and Co-Founder Laura Spawn.
Approximately two-thirds of survey participants have already changed jobs up to five times since they started working, with four in 10 opting to switch careers due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This data tracks with Bureau of Labor Statistics findings that workers will change jobs an average of 12 times in their lifetimes. Half of workers (49%) even claim to be willing to return to school or upskill to support future career changes. Another 33% would also pursue additional training if they were able to lock in a new job ahead of time or received a job offer from an employer willing to offset the cost of education and professional development as part of their benefits package.
Overall, more than 82% of workers are already actively searching for new jobs in 2023 or they are planning to initiate job searches sometime this year. "We recognize how difficult it can be to change careers," Spawn continued, "but the promise of working from home 100% of the time is a lifestyle choice workers want now and into the future—ahead of better compensation and benefits or workplace advancement."
The survey results show that, despite heavy interest in changing careers, workers are not miserable on the job. In fact, 61% are optimistic at the start of their day; 42% feel they work in an environment of constant growth; and 58% believe their work is meaningful. Rather, the move toward career change is about professionals making deliberate choices to improve their quality of life and seek out a great existence at work rather than one that is simply good enough.
