Volatile, Ambiguous Business Environment Impacts Approach to Leadership Development
We live in a VUCA environment: Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity. JER HR Group has released a report discussing the impact of these drivers on the development of future leaders and what to do in A New Approach to Leadership Development.
NEW YORK, July 11, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- JER HR Group has released a special report for Human Resource and Learning Development Professionals titled A New Approach to Leadership Development discussing how a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous business and political environment impacts the development of future leaders.
"We live in a VUCA environment, meaning one filled with Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity," says Sandie Bateman, report author and Director of Learning & Development with JER HR Group. Taken from language used by the military to describe the 'fog of war,' Bateman says VUCA is an applicable description for today's business environment. "Within a rapidly changing and often unpredictable business environment, even a great leader can feel overwhelmed and under-prepared."
The report proposes how Leadership Development functions should be reconsidered to help employees develop continual learning skills, and urges companies to move away from the system of "identifying high-potential individuals who can grow over time" to scouting for those who may not have positional authority but have the vision and drive to lead.
Bateman says understanding how the VUCA environment affects leaders and others, and how to adapt to maintain productivity and communication is critical. Bateman recommends that Leadership Development programs encompass emotional and cognitive skills as well as organizational and management skills. "Emotional and cognitive skills provide the mental preparedness necessary to deal with whatever comes your way."
A New Approach also moves outside of the traditional "employee only" training model to include subcontractors given their impact on culture and operations. 43% of U.S. workers are currently independent contractors, and that number is expected to climb. "The need for sharing the organization's culture and values will grow as companies increasingly bring in support from outside the organization. Rethinking ways to ensure skills and attitude fit organizational requirements is critical" said David Moff, Managing Consultant at JER HR Group.
