Weeks Marine employees build 55 bicycles across six states in support of local children and community organizations.
GEORGETOWN, Texas, Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Bikes for Goodness Sake (BFGS) announced today a multi-city volunteer initiative in partnership with Weeks Marine, Inc. The program brought employees together across eight locations on Sept. 18 for a companywide bike build initiative combining team building with meaningful community service. In partnership with Bikes for Goodness Sake, Weeks Marine employees assembled a total of 55 bicycles that were donated to nonprofit organizations and community programs serving children and families in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Texas, Louisiana and Hawaii.
The events were part of Weeks Marine's September Month of Volunteering and gave employees across corporate offices, project sites and operational yards the opportunity to step away from their day-to-day work, connect with coworkers and give back to the communities where they live and work. All eight bike builds were held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sept. 18, creating a shared companywide experience across multiple states and time zones.
Weeks Marine selected the bike build program because it combined hands-on volunteering with employee engagement and team building. Bikes for Goodness Sake coordinated the bicycles, helmets and professional mechanics at each location to help ensure every bike was assembled safely and ready for its new rider.
"Everyone had such a wonderful time," said Karen Newsholme, administrative assistant, Weeks Marine – Construction. "For many of our employees, this was the first time they had ever built a bike, which made the experience even more memorable. It was a great opportunity to spend time together as a team while also knowing that the bikes were going directly to organizations helping children and families in our communities."
The impact of the builds extended across a diverse group of local organizations. In Louisiana, employees at the Covington office built 15 bicycles for the Covington Boys & Girls Club, while the team at the Houma Yard assembled 10 bicycles for MacDonell Children's Services. In Texas, employees at the Houston office built five bicycles for The James Project, and the Houston Ship Channel Project team built another five bicycles for the Kemah Police Department's Shop with a Cop Program.
Elsewhere across the country, employees in Cranford, New Jersey, assembled 10 bicycles for ARC Union County; the Honolulu, Hawaii, team built four bicycles for Family Programs Hawaii; and employees in Groton, Connecticut, assembled four bicycles for Klingberg Family Centers. In Brooklyn, New York, the team built two bicycles for Brooklyn Children's Theatre.
For many participants, the experience created an immediate desire to continue the tradition.
"One of the most rewarding things to hear afterward was how many employees asked if we could do this again every year," said Katie Story, assistant estimating manager, Weeks Marine, Inc. "The bike builds gave people a chance to work together in a completely different way, have fun and see the direct impact their efforts could have on local children and families. It really brought the teams together."
For Bikes for Goodness Sake, the Weeks Marine event demonstrated how a single companywide initiative can create meaningful impact across multiple communities while strengthening connections among employees.
"What Weeks Marine accomplished is exactly what these events are all about," said Mark Smith, founder of Bikes for Goodness Sake. "Whether a team builds four bikes or 15, every location has the opportunity to create something meaningful together and make a difference in its own community. Coordinating eight events across the country on the same day is a great example of how companies can bring their people together around a shared purpose."
The Weeks Marine bike builds are part of a growing number of corporate volunteer events facilitated by Bikes for Goodness Sake throughout the United States and Canada. The organization provides turnkey bike build experiences for companies looking to combine employee engagement, team building and community giving in one hands-on event.
