Many ingredients in cleansers, moisturizers and serums are known to seep into your bloodstream and accumulate in your body over time, potentially causing adverse effects to your health. What "Natural" and "Organic" Labels Really Mean

When you pick up a bottle, the word "natural" overlaid on a backdrop of picturesque botanicals might make you feel safe. But the truth is, the words "natural" and "organic" are not regulated at all in the U.S., which means anyone has free reign to label their products as either—it doesn't matter if their formulas contain 100%, or 1%, natural ingredients.

In other words, if you add a small concentration of, say, lavender extract into a blend of chemically laden, controversial ingredients, you can technically still tout your product as "natural."

As for "organic," what it suggests is that an ingredient was grown and processed in the absence of pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, genetically modified organisms (GMOs), radiation and other toxic substances. While the food industry regulates the term, the beauty industry doesn't enjoy the same oversight. In fact, if you pick up a moisturizer labeled "organic" (whether it's the full formula or select ingredients), keep in mind that nobody has overseen and substantiated it.

So what's a health-conscious customer to do?

First, this is not to say that all skincare products bearing the "natural" and/or "organic" label are misguiding you. But it's smart to investigate yourself in lieu of merely trusting labels.

To start, below are three assumptions NOT to make when you shop for natural skin care:

1. Don't assume a product labeled "natural" and/or "organic" is 100% natural or organic. Start by reading the full ingredients list to see how many chemicals versus natural ingredients you can find, or simply accessing a resource like the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database and checking if the product is rated—and if so, if it's rated high.
2. Don't assume that all natural ingredients are beneficial and safe for skin. (Think about it: poison ivy is natural, but it's certainly doesn't help your skin.) Other natural ingredients, such as wintergreen extract and tocopherol (vitamin E), can actually be irritating to skin, particularly for sensitive types.
3. Don't assume that because one product in a collection is natural/organic that the other products are, too. It's possible for a brand to formulate a totally green product while adding toxins to others.

So, is there any label you can trust? Fortunately, there is one that holds some weight: "USDA Certified Organic."

"USDA Certified Organic"—and Why It Gives You More Peace of Mind, Guaranteed

If a company wants to label their product as "USDA Certified Organic," it must be certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This label ensures that processing and packaging meets strict controlled guidelines, and that virtually all of the ingredients in the product have been grown and processed in regulated conditions that ensure sanitation without pesticides, GMOS, synthetic preservatives and petrochemicals and even sewage sludge.

Here's how to navigate the "USDA Certified Organic" label, straight from the horse's mouth!

  • "100% Organic: Must contain only organically produced ingredients. (The USDA seal may appear on the package.)
  • Organic: Must contain 95% minimum organically produced ingredients. Products cannot be produced using synthetic preservatives, petrochemicals, ionizing radiation or any other excluded methods. (The USDA seal may appear on the package.)
  • Made with Organic Ingredients: Contain at least 70 percent organic ingredients. (The USDA seal cannot be used anywhere on the package.)"
