Since having a hearing disability since I was 5 years old, I can relate to the struggles people face in everyday situations. After taking a tour of their facility and seeing their demo dog in action, I can relate to what a great benefit these dogs can be to others.

DBL has been providing assistance dogs to people across the United States since 1977. The award-winning non-profit’s certified professional staff train and place assistance dogs with individuals who are deaf or who have hearing loss and with children who are on the autism spectrum.

“Since having a hearing disability since I was 5 years old, I can relate to the struggles people face in everyday situations. I am fortunate that I am now able to benefit from wearing hearing aids. After taking a tour of their facility and seeing their demo dog in action, I can relate to what a great benefit these dogs can be to others. It’s nice to see the joy and life these dogs bring to them with a new found independence,” said Malone.

Although the majority of the dogs trained by DBL are rescued from shelters, Autism Assistance Dogs navigate through a more in-depth process. Due to the need to know the complete temperament of a dog, rescue dogs are not ideal for the autism program. Therefore, DBL has started a small breeding program, primarily with Golden Retrievers and Labradors, in support of the growing Autism Assistance Dog program.

DBL also specializes in Hearing Assistance Dogs trained to alert people who are deaf or hard of hearing to household sounds and Program Assistance Dogs that go to work with and assist full-time professionals such as teachers, counselors and other licensed therapists in the treatment of and work with their clients and students with special needs.

“DBL has been rescuing dogs from shelters and training them to become Assistance Dogs for more than four decades,” concluded Malone. “It is an honor to help them fulfill their mission.”
