SOUTHAMPTON, England, Oct. 1, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Winter Olympic golden girl Amy Williams MBE was at Southampton Airport this week to celebrate the return of easyJet's popular winter route to Geneva for the third consecutive year.
The skeleton gold Olympic medal winner praised the ease with which winter sports fans and holidaymakers can get from Southampton to The Alps, adding that easy access to the slopes is key for winter Olympic hopefuls to be able to train.
Amy hopes that the ease of access could result in a future Winter Olympics gold medal winner coming from the south. She was in Southampton to mark the launch of the 2019 route alongside MD of Southampton Airport Neil Garwood.
Amy hit international headlines at the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010, when she became the first GB individual to take any top spot at a Winter Olympics for 30 years.
She has since retired from the sport but says that winter sports are still an important part of her family life.
Amy said: "Regional flights to the slopes were so important to me when I was training for the Olympics. I hope that the ease of getting from Southampton to Geneva and onto the slopes will encourage young winter sports fans from the south to seriously set their sights on training for Olympic gold themselves.
"You can get from the train at Southampton Parkway to your plane in just 99 steps, and be on the slopes within two hours of landing. It doesn't really get any easier than that."
While the route's main appeal is for winter sports fans, it is also attracting tourists looking for a seasonal getaway. Geneva has a charming old town and, along with nearby Lausanne and Montreux, boasts a popular Christmas market.
This season, the route will hit some important milestones:
The 100th easyJet Southampton to Geneva flight will be on Christmas Eve
The 25,000th passenger on this route will fly on Boxing Day
The 30,000th passenger on this route will fly on February 20, 2020
Amy also noted what good news the route was for families adding: "Now I have a young family of my own, quick, easy flights are even more important when it comes to me and my kids getting easy access to the slopes. All parents know that the best journeys with children are the ones with the least hassle, and flying from a regional airport like Southampton definitely makes for an easier journey as a family."
Neil Garwood said that it was no surprise that the route had proved so popular, offering such easy access to the slopes for winter sports fans and also being a great seasonal holiday location.
He said: "This is great news for travellers from the south. The Southampton to Geneva route offers fantastic access to the Alps, with a range of world-class resorts to choose from, including Chamonix, Verbier and Gstaad.
"Geneva is a fantastic destination, whether you're a fan of winter sports or just want to enjoy a charming seasonal getaway. We are delighted that travellers from Southampton Airport are going to be able to discover Geneva for themselves with flights of less than two hours, allowing them to make the most of a short break or a longer trip."
