SAN DIEGO, Jan. 27, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Dr. Jennifer Winward, founder and CEO of Winward Academy, was named to the San Diego Business Journal's list of "Top 40 Business Leaders Under 40" for 2019. According to the San Diego Business Journal, the distinction is intended to "introduce the young leaders, change makers and innovators who are making waves, creating impact and leaving a positive mark on the San Diego community." Winward's impact is in education.
Winward recognizes that the opportunity gap in our country only gets wider when students from underserved communities lack access to the same resources as their peers from higher earning households. Committed to education equity, she developed an online learning platform, Winward Academy, which is the first to honor over 40 years of research about learning theory, tying in her Ph.D. work studying adolescent brain development and learning.
To ensure all students have access to quality teaching, Winward actively nurtures partnerships between Winward Academy and charities, foundations, and organizations that support teens living in poverty or foster care; overcoming abuse, trauma, and homelessness; moving frequently with parents in the military; battling cancer or acute illnesses; and struggling with learning disabilities.
In San Diego, Winward Academy supports the YMCA by providing college readiness workshops, in-class and after-school academic support, and weekend review sessions for first generation, low-income college bound high school students in East County and the South Bay. Winward trained staff at Barrio Logan College Institute to become college and career coaches who mentor students in Barrio Logan and San Ysidro through a partnership with South Bay Community Services. Winward also supports teens being treated for cancer at Rady Children's Hospital; teens in City Heights attending Reality Changers and Price Philanthropies for after school support; and squash players from Preuss School who attend Access Youth Academy for after school help.
Winward recognizes that academic success begins with safety and security. She secured a partnership with Dr. Reid Meloy - internationally recognized forensic psychologist, consultant, and author – whose School Safety, Threat Assessment, and Threat Management curriculum is now offered through Winward Academy to districts, school resource officers, counselors, psychologists, and teachers.
"I am honored for this recognition by the San Diego Business Journal," shared Winward. "I hope to continue to expand our partnerships to maximize our impact in San Diego and support students to gain the content knowledge, skills, and confidence they need for college and beyond."
