TACOMA, Wash., July 30, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- In his debut book release, Jonathan R.C. Green narrates his memorable experiences as a young Peace Corps volunteer "Fighting Malaria on the River Kwai" (published by Archway Publishing).
"Most travelogues describe journeys of several weeks, or occasionally several months, but this is the story of a young American 'babe in the woods' living for two years in a rugged environment without any 'modern conveniences,' among people with a vastly different world view, and how he came of age," the author describes.
During World War II, thousands of Allied prisoners of war and Asian forced laborers died, often from malaria, while constructing a railroad through the valley of the river Kwai in western Thailand. In the 1970s, Green served there as a Peace Corps volunteer, working in malaria control. He had a unique opportunity to fight the dreadful disease while living, learning and working among very friendly, polite and considerate Thai people.
At its core, Green's journey highlights the wonderful, life-changing experience of serving as a Peace Corps volunteer, from which one can derive a better understanding of other cultures and of the self, while working to make the world a better place.
"Most people in foreign countries are not threats to our way of life; instead, they can greatly enrich our society and culture. It is vitally important for Americans to understand how people in other countries live and how they think; and that the American way is not necessarily the only way, and not always the best way to get things done," Green emphasizes. "I did my best to try to make the world a better place, and I think the experience made me a better person."
