SAN FRANCISCO, June 25, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Worklete, a technology platform that prevents musculoskeletal injuries in labor intensive workforces, and Hub Group, a leading supply chain solutions provider, have been selected by Supply & Demand Chain Executive (SDCE) as recipients of the SDCE 100 Award for 2019.
The SDCE 100 is an annual list of 100 great supply chain projects, which supply chain executives use to drive improvement in their own operations and help their customers achieve supply chain excellence.
Hub Group has always been committed to safety. Prior to implementing Worklete, a key occupational injury focus was on ergonomics within the truck. However, drivers were still sustaining back injuries, sprains, and strains. Hub Group looked for an innovative solution to help drivers build safe movement habits. Worklete's technology platform delivered three- to five-minute learning modules every week. The program addressed common movements – such as lifting and bending – as well as freight-specific tasks, including unhitching a trailer, that could lead to injuries. After implementing Worklete's platform across Hub Group's 160 locations in the U.S. and Canada, Hub Group decreased its recordable injury rate by 63% over three years, resulting in an 85% reduction in injury-related direct costs over that same time period.
"There's an infinite number of tasks and situations that truck drivers at Hub Group can encounter every day. Simply engineering the environment around them is never going to be enough," said Benjamin Kanner, co-founder and CEO of Worklete. "If you focus on training the person to use their body correctly, then it doesn't matter how many new situations or environments that truck drivers encounter, because they can deal with them effectively."
Musculoskeletal disorders are soft-tissue injuries that typically result from overexertion or repetitive motion, including sprains and strains, as well as more severe injuries to the shoulders, knees, and back. Because injuries like these take a long time to heal and frequently reoccur, they are the most costly type of injury to US businesses. According to the 2019 Liberty Mutual Safety Index, overexertion and repetitive motion injuries cost US businesses $16.8 billion annually. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that musculoskeletal disorders of the back, shoulder and arm account for 59% of work-related injuries involving days away from work.
"Safety is a key focus at Hub Group, and Worklete has helped us achieve dramatic reductions in our lost-time injuries," said Tim Smith, Senior Vice President of Safety at Hub Group. "Worklete is effective because of the fresh and innovative way that it delivers information to our workers."
"Every year our list of submissions for the SDCE 100 continues to grow as more companies rely on the expertise of supply management for innovative decision-making. Our winners raise the bar for what is achievable in the supply chain," says John R. Yuva, editor for Supply & Demand Chain Executive. "With a variety of company sizes and industry sectors represented, our Top 100 are leading examples for how to approach and solve supply chain challenges. Congratulations to our 2019 winners and the projects that delivered greater operational efficiencies and bottom-line results across the supply chain."
