World Renowned Israeli Researcher Shares Groundbreaking Research on the Obesity Epidemic and its Connection to Alzheimer's Disease
Prof. Michal Beeri of Sheba Medical Center, Tel HaShomer and a professor of psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is collaborating with doctors here in the United States on pioneering work on the dramatic lifelong effects of the obesity crisis. Beeri's work in collaboration with Mount Sinai in New York City and other Israeli hospitals, is showing the dramatic, lifelong effects of obesity, including its connection to Alzheimer's.
NEW YORK, April 9, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Internationally acclaimed Sheba Medical Center researcher Prof. Michal Beeri has revealed groundbreaking findings that point to the lifelong negative consequences of obesity and its connection to Alzheimer's disease. Beeri has been part of incredible research team that has studied middle-aged adult obesity and how it affects the brain 40 years later. Her group is also tracking elderly diabetics and has found that higher body mass index (greater obesity) is linked to smaller volumes of certain areas in the brain. Those smaller areas suggest Alzheimer's disease.
With a collaboration of several hospitals in the U.S. and Israel, Prof. Beeri has also recently proposed a large grant to the National Institute on Aging to track the lifelong effects on children born to obese parents.
If a mother is obese during pregnancy, initial data in animal models shows that there is a much higher chance that the offspring will be obese. These offspring also have a higher risk of Alzheimer's later, as obesity affects brain development.
"Obesity is a lifelong issue. An obese child can have self-confidence issues at 17, heart problems at 40 and Alzheimer's at 60 or 70. Obesity is also a main cause for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a host of other problems that are also linked to Alzheimer's disease."
