World Renowned Expert's Latest Book Treats Corporate Governance in the Digitalized Era
COVID-19 disrupted 'business as usual,' accelerating digitization worldwide. Saleh Hussain's new book, 'Corporate Governance: Challenges in the Digitalized Era' helps companies mitigate risk and gain competitive advantage through proactive governance.
MANAMA, Bahrain, June 17, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- As the COVID-19 global pandemic spread across the globe last year, more employees began working from home and other remote locations for extended periods. While many welcomed the benefits of remote work, it exposed organizations to additional risks and vulnerabilities. The rapid digitization unleashed by the pandemic makes proactive corporate governance more important than ever. Saleh Hussain's newest book, 'Corporate Governance: Challenges in the Digitalized Era,' will help organizations install effective corporate Governance, regardless of their previous level of implementation. The author is a leading expert on corporate governance (CG), and has published over ten books on the topic in English and Arabic. A professional banker with over forty years of banking experience, Hussain spent the last twenty years as CEO of various banks and financial institutions.
News reports state companies will allow post-pandemic remote work, and some have already closed office buildings or reduced office space. Having navigated virtual company meetings through platforms like Zoom and MS Teams, there's no turning back the embrace of information and communication technologies (ICT). The continued trend of remote working brings up a chief concern—data security. Strong policies alone are not enough. Companies need to train staff and monitor compliance with such policies. If that sounds like a lot of work, it is.
According to the author, however, the "downside risks of not proactively reviewing [corporate governance] systems outweigh any inconveniences." Companies that do not implement CG on a timely basis will "lag behind, and suffer operational and regulatory risk." Hussain offers the sobering suggestion that, "a company could be wiped out as the result of the execution of an unauthorized online transaction."
The author insists the time to act is now. Existing businesses should self-review their operations and activities, instead of waiting for outside authorities or business failures to expose their weaknesses. New businesses should establish proactive CG before they launch their first product or service.
Hussain acknowledges that prescribing and detailing requirements can be futile. The pace of change is such that by the time research is published, it's already outdated and redundant. Instead of despairing, however, he offers hope: "[This book] promotes a different approach, detailing a mechanism that makes the application of corporate governance in such a fast-moving environment possible."
Corporations today generate more data in a single day than companies of the past generated in a year. Effective corporate governance allows organizations to maximize the use of information as a business asset, while minimizing the risk and costs associated with data storage and security.
The book features detailed case studies that serve as cautionary tales. As the preface explains, "The comparative case studies included here assist the reader in learning from the experiences of others, without being subjected to the financial pain and humiliating failures that a lack of adherence to corporate governance can bring."
Mr. Adnan Ahmed Yousif, chairman of the Board of Trustees of Bahrain Association of Banks, calls Hussain's latest work, "an excellent read for leaders of any organization that aims for a sustainable future." It might be added that any organization not aiming for a sustainable future is not likely to have one. Hussain's latest contribution offers leaders and executives just the map they need to chart a course to effective governance during these times of unprecedented change.
