WYSIWYG the Musical announces COVID-friendly performance materials
Over the past nine months the theater community has been forced into a whole new way of working together. At first, most of us were reluctant to embrace technology, but eventually we started joining in and learned to adapt to the new COVID normal.
DENVER, Oct. 8, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Colorado composer, April Alsup, announced today the availability of new virtual performance materials specifically designed for theater companies considering COVID-friendly works. The package includes instructions to produce the entire WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) musical online and supplements the show's best practices for eco-friendly productions.
In 2018, WYSIWYG (WIZ-ee-wig) was presented the "Greener Planet" award at the Abrons Art Center in New York City by the Planet Connections Theatre Festival. The new off-Broadway show used an entirely paperless rehearsal process, repurposed costumes & sets, flexible online ticketing and program guides accessible through QR-code phone apps.
To become COVID-friendly the show had to retool its rehearsal processes and physical scenes were transitioned to one-to-one device apps, online therapy sessions and happy hour groups. A new sound track was created to support the new paradigm and the rehearsal materials are all available from the WYSIWYG website.
In early 2020, the coronavirus pandemic shut down theaters across the country and performances of WYSIWYG were canceled. "The last nine months have been difficult for everyone in the theater community", said April Alsup, who created the work "It's hard to stay focused and creative during this time and safety is important to all of us". She now meets with actors, singers and production teams remotely using a plethora of online collaboration tools.
