YY Nation Launches the Legacy Footwear Collection, a Sustainably-focused Shoe Line, on Kickstarter
Taking pre-consumer, post-consumer, and plant waste, YY Nation's Legacy Footwear Collection is the shoe brand committed to becoming a circular solution in the footwear industry.
WELLINGTON, New Zealand, Sept. 15, 2020 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- A new era in sustainable footwear begins today with YY Nation's Legacy Footwear Collection launching on Kickstarter. Emphasizing a reduction in waste at every stage of the consumer cycle, the Legacy Footwear Collection uses pre-consumer, post-consumer, and plant waste to reduce the amount of plastic created and left behind.
The fashion and footwear industries are major contributors to global waste and pollution problems. Although there's been some push toward using more sustainable materials or processes, there aren't many brands committed to sustainability and ethically-produced shoes at every stage of the process.
YY Nation's Legacy Footwear Collection is a shoe line that incorporates natural, sustainable, and recycled materials into every part of the shoe. Using wool, algae, bamboo, sugar cane, recycled fishnets, plastic bottles, and recycled rubber, the entire shoe is created with sustainability and the planet in mind. Plant-based adhesives are also used to help bind the shoe and create additional natural strength.
In 2018, an estimated 24 billion pairs of shoes were made, according to National Geographic. The majority of them were not made of sustainable materials, but rather plastic and rubber. According to the US Department of the Interior, Americans throw away more than 300 million pairs of shoes each year. They end up in landfills and take decades to decompose.
"After noticing tiny pieces of plastic mixed in with the grains of sand on the beach, I was compelled to create something that wouldn't contribute to the problem I was seeing," said Jeremy Bank Director of YY Nation. "Every component of the Legacy Footwear Collection, from the soles to the laces and the packaging, is made with sustainable or natural materials or waste that would otherwise be landfill-bound."
The Legacy Footwear Collection features two different upper options: soft, breathable wool, ethically sourced from New Zealand farms, or woven bamboo/nylon mesh featuring nylon thread made from recycled plastic bottles. An algae insole provides all-day comfort and support while reducing algae blooms from waterways. Laces are made from recycled ocean plastics and the outsoles feature either sugar cane or algae combined with recycled rubber – a combination that can withstand any situation.
Four styles make up the collection, and each is offered in black, charcoal, light grey or off-white colorways. To pre-order a pair starting at $75, visit pr.go2.fund/yynation.
