The receptacle provides protection against electrical shock due to ground faults and electrical fires caused by arc faults. As a ground fault interrupter (GFCI), it detects when less current is flowing back to the outlet than is flowing out. It is also an arc fault interrupter (AFCI) and disconnects electricity when current arcs outside the conductor due to damaged or faulty wiring.
