100% Recyclable Surfboard wins Best in Show at The Boardroom
Hawthorne, CA. USA (PRWEB) June 04, 2015 -- Two weekends ago in Del Mar, CA, surfboard shaping veteran Maurice Cole and Earth Technologies (E-Tech) took home the blue ribbon at the surf industry’s ‘Best In Show’ at the Boardroom International Surfboard Show (http://www.boardroomshow.com). Their board, dubbed the ‘Dirty Dingo’, represented the best use of sustainable materials in a modern, high performance surfboard. In addition to using a post-consumer recycled foam core, cellulose-based fiberglass, and wooden fins and leash plug, the board featured a 100% recyclable surfboard resin made by Connora Technologies (http://www.connoratech.com). The board represented the industry’s first modern performance surfboard, that takes into consideration end-of-life or ‘cradle- to-cradle’ design.
“We (E-Tech) were really honored to have been awarded the 1st place prize, alongside a hero of ours, Maurice Cole. E-tech has been pushing the limits of sustainable surfboard construction, for a long time now. Maurice’s Dirty Dingo represents the past few years of us exploring new materials and design to make a high performance surfboard with minimal impact on the environment and the board builder. We’re really proud that the industry has come around to embrace and highlight sustainability at the Boardroom Show.”, stated E-Tech’s co-founder Todd Patterson.
E- tech’s other co-founder, Ryan Harris exclaimed, “The competition really stepped up this year! We used to be the only guys making Ecoboards for a while. But now, there were entries from bigger surfboard companies like Surftech and Hydroflex, down to startups like Greenlightning, Frankenheim, and Donald Brink. The Ecoboard movement is growing. So it was really meaningful for us to take home 1st place in the Industry’s first ‘Sustainable’ Best In Show event.” A 100% agave board by legendary shaper Gary Linden in collaboration with Jose Cuervo, and an algae-based foam surfboard by UCSD tied for second place.
The Boardroom Show is an annual gathering of both large and small companies to showcase the latest in surfboard technologies, designs, and craftsmen. This year, sustainable materials were highlighted as a requirement of the Best In Show category. Materials companies, Entropy Resins (http://entropyresins.com) and Marko Foam (http://www.markofoam.com), both long time proponents for eco-friendly materials in the composites industry, sponsored the event. While the Best in Show criteria leveraged an industry benchmark set by Sustainable Surf, a non-profit organization that has pioneered several sustainability efforts in the surf industry, including the ‘Ecoboard’ Project. Several well known pro surfers, including Rob Machado, Greg Long, and Ryan Burch, alongside veteran board builder Steve Brom, Jim Moriarty Former CEO of Surfrider Foundation, and Derek Sabori VP Global Sustainability at Volcom, formed the judging panel for Best In Show.
