Livonia, MI (PRWEB) October 14, 2017 -- Dr. Shilpa Kolhatkar (DDS), who holds a three-year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Periodontics, presented a lecture on the topic, ‘Esthetics in Anterior Immediate Implant Placement’ at the 12th Annual Women in Dentistry event held at VistaTech Center, Schoolcraft College, Livonia, MI on Friday, 13th October 2017. The goal of ‘Women in Dentistry’ program that is held every year in Michigan is to encourage women in supporting one another and building businesses. Quoting the changing demographics in the dental profession, ‘Women in Dentistry’ web-site cites, “Before 1970, women constituted less than 3% of practicing dentists in US. By 2010-2011, 46% of dental students in US were women, whereas currently, women make up approximately 25% of practicing dentists and 50% of all dental students."
Dr. Kolhatkar, who is a partner at Advanced Periodontics & Implantology (API), a premier clinical and educational center in Michigan with locations in Plymouth and Livonia, was a key speaker at the Women in Dentistry Program. API conducts regular CE programs and hands on courses (on-site and off-site) for general dentists and helps in the growth of their individual practices by elevating their knowledge, skills and patient care delivery. Dr. Kolhatkar has been named top dentist by Hour Magazine. She has lectured extensively on various topics related to periodontics, implants, advanced surgical procedures and interdisciplinary treatment modalities. Dr. Kolhatkar stated, “The relevance of immediate implant placement in implant dentistry is increasing as it yields better and faster functional results with increased patient compliance. Clinical studies validate the successful results of immediate placement of dental implants in fresh extraction sockets.”
Dr. Kolhatkar has published several original scientific articles in high impact international journals and performs procedures related to Periodontics and Implantology at API, Michigan. She informed the audience, “Placement of dental implants in the upper front area of the jaw poses challenges because of esthetic concerns. In order to accomplish a successful treatment outcome after immediate placement of implants in the anterior or esthetic region, proper diagnosis and treatment planning are important. CBCT (cone-beam computed tomography) is presently the most trusted technique in diagnosis and treatment planning in implant dentistry as it generates accurate 3D images of oral structures and soft & hard tissues in a single scan.”
With over 17 years of experience in a wide variety of non-surgical and surgical periodontal procedures including placement of dental implants, Dr. Kolhatkar gave the audience some very useful tips for a beautiful esthetic smile with dental implants. She also informed them about how to preserve and develop the gum structure around an implant; described bone grafting for augmenting the bony ridge of upper jaw and discussed in detail the prevention and management of complications in immediate implant placement in the anterior region. Dr. Kolhatkar commented, “Certain clinical criteria must be met for achieving an esthetic outcome in the placement of anterior immediate implants, namely intact tooth socket walls after extraction, absence of acute infection, sufficient residual bone on the facial side of the implant (at ≥1 mm) and thick gingival biotype (gums)."
