From his first days in Marshall, Missouri, the music of Bob James has captivated audiences throughout the world. Discovered by Quincy Jones at the Notre Dame Jazz Festival in 1963, James recorded his first solo album, Bold Conceptions, that year for Mercury Records. 58 albums and innumerable awards would follow through five decades. He honed his skills working with Creed Taylor, working on albums for artists like Hank Crawford, Grover Washington, Jr, among others. Bob James and Earl Klugh first collaborated in the late 1970’s and won a GRAMMY® Award together for their first of three albums, One On One. “I always love having Bob at our Weekend of Jazz,” says Klugh. “He has played many times over the years, but this is the first time he is bringing his trio to the festival. I can’t wait!”
WEST COAST JAM: RICHARD ELLIOT, RICK BRAUN & NORMAN BROWN Coming off of the success of Summer Madness, Richard Elliot wanted to tour with a three-piece horn section and a supporting cast of musicians. He reached out to his long-time collaborator Rick Braun and guitarist Norman Brown to join him in creating West Coast Jam. Tenor saxophonist RICHARD ELLIOT has released more than 20 albums as a bandleader, and has also polished his chops serving as a sideman for a considerable list of diverse giants, including Motown hitmakers Smokey Robinson and the Temptations. He has been playing professionally since the early ’80s and currently serves as Earl Klugh and KEM’s musical director. Al has recorded with Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker, Earl Klugh, Oleta Adams, Nancy Wilson, Bob James, Randy Crawford and Gladys Knight, to name a few. Ms. Anita Baker proclaims, “The Burner holds it down; locks it up right and tight,” and R&B Superstar KEM calls Al Turner, “the baddest bass player in the world.” You can also hear Turner on many television and radio commercials.
