1-800-PetMeds® Names Winner of $2,000 Medical Grant in Change a Pet’s Life Contest
Pompano Beach, FL (PRWEB) January 23, 2015 -- 1-800-PetMeds®, America’s Largest Pet Pharmacy®, is announcing the three winning pets of its Change a Pet’s Life Contest. The contest, inspired by Change a Pet’s Life Day on January 24, 2015, was created to sponsor the medical treatments and adoption fees of several adoptable pets.
The contest was open to entries of adoptable pets from U.S. animal shelters and rescue groups from January 9, 2015, to January 15, 2015. Voting opened January 16, 2015, and closed January 22, 2015, at 12 a.m. The three pets with the most votes won grants for their medical treatments or for pet adoption fees.
The first-place pet received more than 21,000 votes. Gorilla, an approximately 7-year-old pug at the Pug Rescue of Austin in Austin, Texas, needs oral and airway surgeries to remove painful, infected teeth and to enable him to breathe normally. 1-800-PetMeds® will donate up to $2,000 for his procedures, which are currently quoted at $1,800, and will also feature him in a video on the 1-800-PetMeds® website.
“He’s going to be a happier, healthier dog who will move around a lot more easily and who won’t live in chronic pain,” said Alecia Zalot, president on the board of directors of Pug Rescue of Austin, about the effect these surgeries will have on Gorilla. “We can all relate to this as animals: we all need to be able to breathe. When you can breathe, you can live.”
The second-place pet, a young dog named Bilbo at One Tail at a Time in Chicago, Ill., received more than 15,000 votes. 1-800-PetMeds® will cover five adoption fees for pets at One Tail at a Time for the second-place prize. The third-place pet, Billy the blind kitten at Second Chance Pet Adoptions in Raleigh, N.C., received more than 12,000 votes and will receive $250 towards his cataract surgery.
“In recognition of Change a Pet’s Life Day, we wanted to make a difference in the lives of a few adoptable pets and help the hard-working animal shelters and rescues that save these animals,” said Alex Irvin, online programs director at 1-800-PetMeds. “Medical procedures like the ones Gorilla needs to live a happy, healthy life can be an overwhelming cost for a group that depends on donations, and we hope by covering his surgery, the Pug Rescue of Austin can use that money to save other needy pets.”
1-800-PetMeds® ran this contest through their PetMeds Cares program, which organizes product donations to animal shelters and rescues across the U.S. For more information on the program and to apply, visit http://www.petmeds.org.
