1 Million Pyrotechnic Flares Out of Circulation

During the month of September, the team will be celebrating the the growing popularity of electronic flares. Specifically, the purchase of electronic flares by recreational boaters has decreased the number of pyrotechnic flares that will require disposal by about 1 million.

Calculating this impact is really just a numbers game.
Each pyrotechnic flare on the market contains an estimated 3.6 grams of perchlorate. While it seems small, this amount can cause up to 2 million gallons of drinking water to exceed acceptable PHG levels at which adverse health effects may occur.
It takes just three pyrotechnic flares (the amount you need to be USCG-compliant for nighttime distress signal devices) to pollute the entire Georgia Aquarium — the biggest aquarium in the United States — at over 6 million gallons.
Boaters now have a choice, buy three single-use pyrotechnic flares or just one non-expiring SOS Distress Light Beacon to be compliant. While pyrotechnic flares have an expiration date, electronic flares do not. There is still the issue of toxic pyrotechnic flare disposal to address.
Pyrotechnic flares are considered both an explosive and hazardous waste, yet there is no single agency or policy that helps boaters properly dispose of their unwanted flares. This means that pyrotechnic flares often sit on a boat well past their expiration date or are thrown into garbage that ends up in our waters and landfills.
