1% for the Planet Loves Blue at Winter OR Show
Waitsfield, VT (PRWEB) January 20, 2014 -- 1% for the Planet, the world’s largest environmental network, will attend this year’s Winter Outdoor Retailer in Salt Lake City, Utah to celebrate member companies giving back to sustainability causes and encourage other businesses in the outdoor industry to join them in protecting the environment. The network also will share a new priority for this year, one shared by member company Mountain Equipment Co-op: reaching beyond its ‘core’ audience and working with aspirational consumers to vote with their dollars in the marketplace.
1% for the Planet was founded 10 years ago by Yvon Chouinard, founder of Patagonia, and Craig Mathews, owner of the Blue Ribbon Flies. The two avid outdoorsmen and entrepreneurs saw 1% for the Planet as a method to encourage businesses to become environmental stewards. Ten years later, the network has over 1,100 business members worldwide, including many in the outdoor space, that choose to make a positive impact with their dollars. The network is also a resource for shoppers, with a logo that can tell consumers at a glance whether the product they purchase Gives Back to Blue.
“While a large part of 1% for the Planet’s mission is to encourage businesses to become environmental leaders, we also strive to make giving back to the planet an easier process for consumers,” said Terry Kellogg, CEO of 1% for the Planet. “The 1% for the Planet logo has become a resource, a telltale sign that your purchases give back, and we’ve found that consumers appreciate that. We’ve had the ears of green advocates since we got our start, but there is a whole other group of people that aspire to give back and are encouraged by our concept. We want them to know that you don’t need to take drastic steps in order to make an impact. It can be as simple as making considerate shopping choices.”
1% for the Planet will be located at Booth #3009 at Outdoor Retailer, alongside longtime business member and industry leader, Klean Kanteen. Throughout the show, 1% for the Planet will also host a series of happy hours with three business members:
• Horny Toad Happy Hour: Wednesday, January 22, 4:30 – 6 p.m. at Booth #30051E
• Ahnu Happy Hour: Thursday, January 23, 4:30 – 6 p.m. at Booth #38172
• Klean Kanteen Happy Hour: Friday, January 24, 4:30 – 6 p.m. at Booth #3009
Klean Kanteen pints will be available for purchase at these events, with proceeds supporting nonprofit partner Wilderness Land Trust and 1% for the Planet.
Additionally, David Labistour, CEO of member company Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC), will be taking the stage at an industry luncheon on Wednesday, January 22nd at 12 PM to talk about the brand’s evolution and efforts to get more Canadians living active lifestyles, and how participating in 1% for the Planet helps MEC accomplish their goal.
