1 Million for Work Flexibility Marks 4th Anniversary, Announces Oct 17th Will Be National Flex Day
Boulder, CO (PRWEB) October 10, 2017 -- 1 Million for Work Flexibility (1MFWF), the first national initiative creating a collective voice in support of flexible work, today announced it will celebrate its 4th anniversary by hosting National Flex Day on October 17, 2017. National Flex Day is designed to encourage employers and employees across the country to unite behind the need for more work flexibility and help promote the power of flexible work arrangements by sharing how pervasive and powerful flex already is.
1MFWF’s celebration includes a contest inviting people to share what work flexibility means to them on 1MFWF’s blog and on Twitter, as well as a webinar on Oct 17th @ 2 P.M. ET detailing the current “State of National Flex.” Panelists will include Sara Sutton Fell, Founder of 1MFWF and FlexJobs, Brigid Schulte, director of the Better Life Lab and The Good Life initiative at New America, and Ian Reynolds, Director of WorkLife and Community Programs in the Office of Work, Life and Engagement at Johns Hopkins. Panelists will address the prevalence and types of flexible work arrangements available, state and federal policies around work flexibility, and the short and long-term outlook of its growth. “National Flex Day is an opportunity for employers and employees to engage in open and honest conversations about the value of work flexibility, to help move this issue forward on a national scale,” said Emma Plumb, the Director of 1 Million for Work Flexibility. “Working Mother established National Flex Day five years ago, and we are proud to carry the torch to use this platform to ensure workers and employers have a space for voicing and understanding this critical workplace need.”

Why Work Flexibility Matters
-If every firm in the country adopted work flexibility, our economy could save about $15 billion annually, according to economist Heather Boushey;
-Rest is required for optimal performance at work. Scholars and researchers such as Alex Soojung-Kim Pang, Brigid Schulte, and Christine Carter share their work on this issue on the 1MFWF blog;
-Expanding access to work flexibility could significantly reduce or eliminate the gender pay gap, according to Harvard economist Claudia Goldin;
-Work flexibility is important to myriad groups: working parents, millennials, retirees, freelancers, military spouses, entrepreneurs, caregivers, people in economically depressed or rural areas, introverts, digital nomads and more;
-Work flexibility benefits businesses and the bottom line (see new 1MFWF Fact Sheet: The Business Case for Work Flexibility);
-Nationally, telecommuting grew 115 percent between 2005 and 2015 and the trend is expected to continue.
As the original founders of National Flex Day, Working Mother continues to support this crucial effort. Meredith Bodgas, Editor-in-Chief of Working Mother magazine and workingmother.com says, "Working Mother recognizes that moms' family schedules don't always meld with a 9-to-5, in-office, 5-day-a-week job. That's why we're proud to support National Flex Day and send the message that moms can do great work whenever, wherever companies allow them."
Earlier this year 1MFWF launched a comprehensive resource on Work Flexibility Policy, which provides details on proposed and enacted U.S. city, state, and federal legislation that addresses flexible work issues. 1MFWF also offers guides on How to Ask for Work Flexibility, the Business Case for Work Flexibility, and the various Types of Work Flexibility.
