2013 Hurricane Season One Day Away From Record Books; Six Hurricanes Still Predicted

Houston, TX (PRWEB) September 25, 2013 -- Even though the 2013 hurricane season has been slow, Hurricane Humberto was the first hurricane formed of the 2013 Atlantic season. The Science Recorder (9.16.13) reported that Hurricane Humberto kept 2013 one day away from being the slowest start to the hurricane season and out of the record books.

It's been 11 years since the month of August has had a hurricane form in the Atlantic and some believe the hurricane season has been too quiet.

According to Time Magazine, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicted a "very active" tropical-storm season. They stated up to 11 hurricanes would hit this season and lowered that estimate to between six and nine at the start of August.

"It's important to remember that hurricane season isn't over yet," stated Jeffrey Raizner of Doyle Raizner, LLP. "Some of the worst storms in history have hit land in the later part of the season."

Mr. Raizner advises that when a hurricane does hit it is crucial to be prepared. Hurricane prep tips for businesses and individuals include:

  • Obtain windstorm AND flood insurance
  • Consult with an insurance agent once a year to review coverage on the home or business
  • Have insurance agent’s contact information available
  • Keep hurricane supplies on hand including a first aid kit, food, water and flashlights
  • Develop a contingency plan for employees
  • Keep up with routine maintenance for the foundation and roof of the business or home.
  • Take inventory and pictures of property and keep all records in a safe location

“Hurricane preparation is vital in order to save lives and deal with damage after the storm,” said Raizner. “It is still possible for strong hurricanes to hit this season and important to protect people, homes and businesses when this happens,” said Raizner.

Many of the strongest storms have historically struck in August or early September, but not all of them. Andrew in 1992, Katrina in 2005 and Dolly in 1996 all struck later in the season. A large storm could still cause damage and the season doesn't officially end until November 30. Superstorm Sandy formed in late October of last year.

Another hurricane forming later in the season than normal was Ike. This was the third costliest hurricane to hit the United States and the costliest in Texas history. Hurricane Ike hit land on September 13th, 2008 with winds above 120 miles per hour. Damages in the United States were estimated at over $29 billion.
