The brainchild of Paul O'Neill, the TSO's creative core is composed of O'Neill, Jon Oliva, Al Pitrelli and Robert Kinkel. Founded in 1996, it has been performing its Christmas Concert series since 1999. Through the years, it has added to the material the release of albums and extended play records. They have created a loyal following which has been their base in selling more than 9 million concert tickets and 8 million album copies their founding.
The band has roots in another heavy metal group, Savatage, of which Kinkel and Oliva were members. Savatage is famous for their symphonic heavy metal rock operas. This became the base for TSO's first album, Dead Winter Dead, which included the minor hit “Christmas Eve (Sarajevo 12/24)”. Seeing that there was a niche for Christmas themed symphonic metal, the group released their first album, Christmas Eve and Other Stories. It was not widely received by the industry, although it did create a buzz and a stir among fans with a wide demographics. Young and old alike appreciated the heavy metal Christmas carols. Christmas Eve and Other Stories was later followed in 1998 by Christmas Attic. Their Christmas rock opera trilogy culminated with the release of The Lost Christmas Eve.
They began touring after the release of their third album and rock opera, Beethoven's Last Night. It was also their first non-Christmas themed album. Their latest album is a two-disc set called Night Castle.
Considered as one of the best-selling bands in terms of ticket sales, their concerts are big production numbers, complete with a choir, a narrator, a full 60-piece symphony orchestra, trusses, laser and light show and fireworks.
This year, the TSO kicks off their Christmas concert tour with two shows in Toledo on November 13. As with earlier years, there will be two concert touring groups during November and December. In January, the TSO will be on tour in Europe, with shows in Paris, Brussels, Stuttgart, Dusseldorf, Nuremberg, Frankfurt, Hanover, Berlin, Vienna and Kempten.
