Overwhelming Majority Support Federal Efforts to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy That Some in Congress Want to Eliminate says The National Campaign
Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 09, 2015 -- Eight in 10 adults (83%) support the federal evidence–based Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program (TPPP) and 77% support the Title X Family Planning Program, according to new public opinion data released today by The National Campaign. The widespread public support comes in the wake of recent House and Senate Appropriations Committees votes to either eliminate or gut both the TPPP and Title X programs.
Other findings from the telephone survey of a nationally representative sample of 1,015 adults age 18 and older include:
- 92% of Democrats and 75% of Republicans surveyed support the TPPP.
- 86% of Democrats and 57% of Republicans surveyed support the Title X program.
- Support for the TPPP is strong nationwide: 86% of respondents in the West, 84% in the South, 82% in North Central, and 79% in the Northeast support the TPPP.
- Support for Title X is also strong nationwide: 82% of respondents in the West, 77% in North Central, 74% in the South, and 78% in the Northeast support Title X.
After peaking in the early 1990s, the nation’s teen pregnancy and birth rates have declined dramatically—teen pregnancy is down 51%; teen births down 61%. Since the first round of TPPP grants began in 2010, the teen birth rate in the U.S. has declined 29%, about twice as large as the decline in any other four-year period.
“For those in Congress who want to eliminate or gut the federal evidence-based TPPP and the Title X Family Planning Program, the vast majority of the American public has a clear message: Why mess with success?” said Bill Albert, Chief Program Officer of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. “One of the nation’s great success stories of the past two decades has been the historic declines in teen pregnancy and childbearing and part of that success is due to the TPPP investment in proven programs and Title X.”
