“Each year, over 15,000 parents will hear that their child has been diagnosed with cancer. Our mission is to help these children step outside the confines of their illness and into a world of creativity and imagination. We have found that these very sick children all share one wish, ‘to be normal.’ Anything we can do to make their journey a little easier or a little brighter is our greatest wish. It is a privilege to serve these wonderful children and their families each and every week, all year long. We are truly honored that Don Harper Productions, Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band and Take 6 are giving so much of themselves for this wonderful musical Sunday Matinee.", stated Marilyn Clements, Executive Director of Discovery Arts.
Proceeds from the event, ‘A Benefit Concert for Discovery Arts’, will help fund the non-profit organization’s mission of providing the healing power of the arts to children who are in the hospital undergoing cancer treatment or treatment for life-threatening illness. The 501(c)(3) nonprofit currently provides Arts' Adventure programs to more than 3,500 critically ill children each year in six Southern California hospitals; Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA, Miller Children’s Hospital Long Beach, Jonathan Jaques Children’s Cancer Center at Millers, CHOC Children’s Hospital, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical Center CHOC at Mission, an out of state program is also available at Mercy Children’s Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. All of the programs at Discovery Arts are offered free of charge to the hospitals, patients and the families of patients. Discovery Arts relies completely on the generosity of corporations, private foundations, a committed circle of private donors, art supply manufacturers and an enthusiastic corps of volunteers, to enable them to provide their 'Arts Adventures' to very sick, and often times, forgotten children.
