2016 iaedp™ Symposium Reveals Music as Creative Tool in Treatment of Eating Disorders
Pekin, IL (PRWEB) January 22, 2016 -- Music as a therapeutic intervention for the treatment of eating disorders is becoming more of an integral part of the interdisciplinary effort at treatment centers throughout the U.S. In fact, a workshop to be presented at the 2016 iaedp Symposium, Feb. 17 – 21, will demonstrate that music therapy interventions can foster self-expression, increase self-awareness and insight, decrease anxiety levels, elevate mood and even increase motivation in those who are struggling to recover from an eating disorder.
The presentation, “Hit the Road ED! Innovative Applications and Considerations for the Inclusion of Music Therapy in Treatment for Eating Disorders and the Recovery Process,” will demonstrate music experiential learning opportunities for clinicians, provide insight into current music therapy research and practices and prove why music therapy is an essential component to eating disorder treatment. This workshop will be among the more than 40 other workshops conducted during the annual iaedp Symposium at the Omni on Amelia Island, Florida. According to speaker, Danielle E. Shelton, MM, ME-BC, CEDCAT, a study specifically regarding the use of Cognitive Behavioral Music Therapy (CBMT) techniques was conducted at a residential treatment facility and found that CBMT can help clients identify and combat cognitive distortions, modify behaviors and identify underlying issues that may have contributed to the onset of the eating disorder.
The workshop will reveal that music therapy services for eating disorders can be offered at all levels of treatment. A music therapist is trained as other eating disorder professionals to adapt interventions specifically for specific care based on physiological and psychological strengths and needs, values, religious beliefs and morals. Treatment options often include individual sessions, family sessions, therapeutic group sessions, educational groups, support groups for family and friends and community wellness groups.
