GitPrime Raises $10.5 Million for Data-Driven Software Engineering

GitPrime leads the software industry with a groundbreaking approach for development teams to build better software faster.

Engineers were building powerful productivity tools for everyone else, but relying on storytelling and gut feeling to evaluate their progress. I knew there had to be a better way, so we built it.

Today, GitPrime, the leader in software engineering analytics, announced $10.5M in Series A financing led by OpenView, the expansion stage venture capital firm, with participation from existing investor Data Collective. To date the company has raised $13M and was a member of the Y Combinator 2016 Winter batch. The new funding will be used to expand GitPrime’s product and continue to scale their team.

“As engineering leaders, our mission is to keep the team on track and help each engineer reach their potential, yet even seemingly simple questions like ‘Who should I help today?’ or ‘Did everyone make progress yesterday?’ are surprisingly difficult to answer,” said Travis Kimmel, co-founder and CEO of GitPrime, himself a former engineering manager. “I realized engineers were building powerful productivity tools for everyone else, but we were relying on storytelling and gut feeling to evaluate our own progress. I knew there had to be a better way, so we built it.”

Engineering is the fastest growing, most capital intensive, and often the most strategic division of an enterprise, yet the work itself lacks visibility. Where sales, marketing, and finance teams have clear productivity metrics, engineering teams have no way to measure progress objectively, leading to subjective and potentially capricious management.

“When you hire a team to build a house, you can walk on-site and see the house slowly being built. It's obvious when people are working and their work-product is self-evident,” added Ben Thompson, GitPrime co-founder and Chief Customer Officer. “That's not true when you're building software. On the surface, programming ‘work’ is just people typing on computers. In fact, it's very difficult to tell the difference between incremental progress and chaos at a glance. With GitPrime, software leaders see where they succeed, where they struggle, calculate the hard cost of overhead, and how they compare to industry cohorts.”

Unlike the typical self-reporting based on estimations, GitPrime analyzes the data from the codebase, ticketing system, and engineering’s existing tool chain to provide timely and accurate answers based on facts not feelings. For example, GitPrime helps managers identify engineers who are stuck or bogged down with refactoring, and quantifies the amount of effort spent paying down technical debt. GitPrime also allows organizations to set process improvement targets and understand how they compare to industry benchmarks, bridging the communication gap between engineering and the rest of the organization to help stakeholders finally understand engineering progress based on concrete data.

Customers like Disney, HelloFresh, Magento and Cigna enjoy impressive gains from GitPrime that allow them to code smarter, not harder.

“As every company becomes a software company, the work of software engineers has never been more important,” said Mackey Craven, Partner at OpenView who joins the GitPrime board. “There are plenty of tools that evaluate code, the work product of software engineering. Yet, there hasn’t been a standard way to test, measure, and refine the work process. Just as CRM revolutionized the practice of sales through transparency and measurability, GitPrime is here to supercharge the practice of software engineering.”

GitPrime gives engineering leaders a seat at the table to advocate for resources and demonstrate that they’re driving business value. As seen in other domains, the ability to measure and understand what drives success is both a powerful lever for leadership and a driver for the advancement of the industry as a whole. With a fresh infusion of $10.5M, GitPrime is poised to drive the industry forward toward data-driven software engineering.
