San Antonio, Texas (PRWEB) December 19, 2017 -- St. Mark's Episcopal Church, a downtown landmark, has a 26-year history of providing free concerts to the city of San Antonio. Expanding musical offerings by partnering with other respected institutions is now making possible a 6-day festival with an emphasis on musical education and outreach.

Much of this early music was performed when San Antonio was founded in 1718.

As the San Antonio Tricentennial milestone approached, Dr. Richard Butler, a member of St. Mark's Episcopal church and an early music enthusiast, provided the vision and underwriting to establish a permanent early music presence in San Antonio. That vision became the Alamo Baroque Festival.

“Much of this early music was performed when San Antonio was founded in 1718,” said Butler, Professor Emeritus of Economics at Trinity University and a congregant of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. “Our neighbors Austin, Dallas and Houston have started early music festivals and the time is right for San Antonio.”

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will host the festival January 8-13, 2018. It is an official Tricentennial celebration event.

“Music written hundreds of years ago can sound as fresh and alive today as when it was first heard,” said Dr. Joseph Causby, Organist/Choirmaster at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. “Recorders, baroque violins and trumpets, harpsichords, and viola da gamba excite the senses now as they did centuries ago.”

The Alamo Baroque Festival will increase public awareness of the richness and variety of classical music before 1750, create opportunities for the performance of this repertoire, and educate musicians of all backgrounds, ages, and abilities in the techniques appropriate to early music.

“We have the best of the best performing,” adds Causby. “The public performances, master classes, and private instruction are free and open to all.”

On Thursday, January 11, 2018, Trinity University will host a panel discussion with festival guest artists. Texas Public Radio’s Nathan Cone will moderate a talk on why baroque music is relevant, career highlights of Festival faculty, classic music in a 21st century world, and the future of early music in San Antonio.
