21 Years & Counting: The USC Eye Institute Ranks in the Top 10 Ophthalmology Hospitals in America
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) July 29, 2015 -- We are privileged to announce that U.S. News & World Report has ranked the USC Eye Institute at Keck Medicine of USC as the ninth best ophthalmology hospital in the nation for 2015-2016. This marks the 21st consecutive year that the USC Eye Institute has placed among the top 10 American hospitals for ophthalmology.
“It is an honor to be included in the top 10 ophthalmology hospitals by U.S. News & World Report,” said Rohit Varma, M.D., M.P.H., director of the USC Eye Institute. “These are very competitive rankings and we are truly grateful to our colleagues whose votes placed us in the top 10. We will continue to work hard to earn their confidence and that of our patients.”
U.S. News & World Report’s annual hospital rankings are a consumer service, designed to help patients make informed decisions when choosing care at the best hospitals in the nation — both for general and specialty care. Hospitals are selected and ranked based on a variety of factors, including patient safety, reputation, and mortality rates, as well as peer reviews from more than 9,500 physicians throughout the country.
“Recognition by U.S. News & World Report is not only a great honor for us at the USC Eye Institute; it also provides a pragmatic tool for patients — helping them navigate to centers of excellence for access to the eye care they need,” said Mark Humayun, M.D., Ph.D, co-director of the USC Eye Institute. “When it comes to sight, we live in an environment of urgency and responsiveness. Eye conditions often demand immediate attention, so the sooner a patient finds and chooses the best possible care, the better their chances of preserving, protecting and restoring their vision.”
Part of Keck Medicine of USC, the USC Eye Institute combines a focus on personalized patient care with leading-edge research to create an eye hospital that is equally effective in solving the problems patients face right now and creating better treatments for the future. “Keck Medicine is proud to have the USC Eye Institute included in the top 10 of U.S. News & World Report’s rankings of the country’s best ophthalmology hospitals and clinical programs for 21 years,” said Tom Jackiewicz, senior vice president and CEO of Keck Medicine of USC. “While we are deeply grateful for the recognition, our mission is simply carrying out what we have pledged to do: develop groundbreaking research and apply it to one of humankind’s most significant concerns — the loss of sight. We are grateful to our faculty physicians, nurses, staff, and supporters. Their skill, dedication and compassion inspire us every day.”
While USC Eye Institute has enjoyed great success on both research and patient care fronts, educating the next generation of ophthalmologists continues to be a core mission. The USC Eye Institute’s residency and fellowship programs have long set national standards in training future leaders in ophthalmology. Keck School of Medicine Dean Carmen A. Puliafito, M.D., M.B.A observes, “Ophthalmology is engaged in a quest to prevent and end blindness, and restore sight. Every day our team works with a gifted group of young medical students, residents, and fellows to educate them while deepening our understanding of eye disease, developing novel treatments, and improving the quality of care. While these breakthroughs and new treatments give our patients a greater ability to recover and improve quality of life, educating the next generation of clinicians and scientists paves the way for a bright future.”
Dr. Varma adds, “We are humbled by this honor, but much work lies ahead to achieve a future that preserves the gift of sight at every age and every stage of life.”
