Middletown, NJ (PRWEB) February 11, 2014 -- While according to the National Sleep Foundation 40 million American men and women suffer from sleep disorders, a recent survey conducted by Replacement-Mattress.com shows that actually 38% have more or less severe sleeping issues, which can have a major impact on their productivity and health.
The main sleeping problems are (in the order of frequency):
- Difficulty falling asleep and/or sleeping
- Sleep apnea/snoring
- Usually feeling sleepy during the day
- Waking up with pains in the morning
- Sleep issues due to partner’s sleeping habits
Women have more trouble getting a full night’s sleep and feeling rested than men do, with 40.8% of women admitting that they have sleeping problems, compared to 36.6% of men. In particular, women complain of being unable to fall asleep or stay asleep, as well as feeling sleepy during the day. In case of women, it is important to note that both pregnancy and menopause can negatively influence sleeping habits.
Both women and men complain of sleep apnea, but it tops the list of problems that men have getting quality rest. Contrary to popular opinion, significantly more men (7%) than women (2%) complained that their partner’s sleeping behaviors disrupted their rest.
Additionally, more women (9.2%) than men (7.5%) had trouble with waking up with aches and pains. This could be because women tend to have less physically active jobs than men—office work can contribute to posture problems, which can be exacerbated by pregnancy and sleeping on a low quality mattress.
Surprisingly, young adults are passing more sleepless nights than elderly or middle-aged respondents. While it might be that young adults tend to cut into their sleep time with socializing or working, additional studies have also shown that young adults have dealt with more stress than other age groups in recent years. It’s also possible that sleeping habits are influenced by the fact that young adults usually start a new family and are experiencing the sleepless nights and time crunches that come with caring for a baby or a toddler.
The study also found a correlation between income and sleep quality: the less money coming in, the worse the respondent’s sleep. A big part of this finding is no doubt due to the added stress of trying to make ends meet on a tight budget, in the current economic situation. Other factors include less money to invest in a good quality mattress, as well as more health problems across the board due to limitations in time and money. Surprisingly, the study also found that people living in rural areas had more problems with sleep than respondents in urban or suburban areas.
