3 University of St. Augustine Doctor of Physical Therapy Students Published in Academic Journal, Gerinotes
San Marcos, CA (PRWEB) December 21, 2015 -- Three students from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences’ Flexible Doctor of Physical Therapy program in California were recently published in Gerinotes, the journal of the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy. Yvonne Huang, Michael Traficante and Kayleigh Marsolini each contributed articles on recent technological advances in geriatric care.
• Yvonne Huang of Wakeville, Rhode Island, researched the development of robotic technology, and its use in caring for the elderly. She analyzed various evolutions of patient-assisting robots, from Asia to the United States, and how their use has improved the safety and quality of life of elderly patients utilizing this rapidly changing technology.
• Michael Traficante of Irvine, California, contributed an article on the increasing use of webcams by the children of elderly parents to bridge the gap between completely independent in-home living and assisted living facilities. According to Traficante, research and data show that webcams are providing an opportunity to virtually monitor in-home activities which enable independence and also provide supervision.
• Kayleigh Marsolini of San Diego, California, wrote about the emergence of electronically managed medication systems, which can help with prescription compliance among the elderly. Due to the large number of prescriptions many geriatric patients take on a regular basis, combined with confusion over dosages and times, electronically managed medication systems can help prevent accidental overdoses and missed prescriptions.
“These three students in our Flexible Doctor of Physical Therapy program on our San Marcos, California, campus have shown the academic curiosity and drive that we know our students possess. I am proud that Huang, Traficante and Marsolini have contributed to the important discussion of physical therapy best practices and optimal aging through technology, with the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy,” said Cherie Peters-Brinkerhoff, PT, EdD, MPT, MHA, assistant director of the Flexible Doctor of Physical Therapy program in California.
