Gerry Gibbs’ Thrasher Dream Trio with Kenny Barron and Ron Carter
Announces its highly anticipated debut gig,
And it’s at The Narrows
It is with a breathless sense of excitement that Whaling City Sound, one of the jazz genre’s most adventurous and acclaimed imprints, announces a highly anticipated debut gig. The Thrasher Dream Trio, led by drummer Gerry Gibbs and starring pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Ron Carter, will be playing its first ever live, publicly attended gig together at the august Narrows Center for the Arts in Fall River. For jazz fans, indeed for music fans who appreciate great performances, this is reason for delight.
Here’s a little of the back story, and why you should care: Back in 2012, Gerry Gibbs, an acclaimed drummer hailing from a jazz family (his dad Terry, vibist/composer/bandleader,played with Charlie Parker and Benny Goodman, among others), sought out the services of two of his favorite jazz musicians, his heroes. Pianist Kenny Barron and bassist Ron Carter, one of the art’s most formidable musical partnerships, have been doing sessions and gigs together for over four decades. A list of their guest appearances and leading performances would be too long for our purposes here. Suffice it to say their reputation precedes them. And, oh by the way, they said “yes” to Gibbs’ request.
With Gibbs arranging and playing drums, the Thrasher Dream Trio has made two beautifully executed and enthusiastically received albums. Both records—released on the Whaling City Sound label—hit the top spot on the jazz radio chart and stayed there for a handful of weeks. The first received a Grammy nomination in the “solo performance” category. Their next record, cheekily entitled We’re Back, is a carefully curated mélange of standards, chestnuts, and R&B classics arranged with energy, passion and genius. We’re Back, which also features red hot, world-class guests Warren Wolf (vibraphone), Larry Goldings (B-3), and Steve Wilson (woodwinds)—takes warmly familiar tunes and turns them into sizzling standards that stretch the skills of these consummate musicians and draw the listener into an epic jazz adventure. None other than Joe Lovano loved it, saying, “Gerry Gibbs has put together another fun and swinging session with a new spin on some of the best loved R&B classics of the day …This recording will capture you from start to finish!”
Taken together, the two albums have stayed at the top spot longer than work by any other jazz artist in recent years. Yet, in spite of all this critical acclaim and radio airplay, the band has not performed in public until now. Narrows Center for the Arts (16 Anawan St., Fall River, MA 02721 508.324.1926) is pleased to present this remarkable trio in its premier performance Saturday, April 25, 2015. Doors: 7:00 pm • show 8pm • tickets $50 advance • $55 day of show
