Los Angeles - Wednesday and Thursday, October 14th and 15th, 2015, California Endowment Center for Healthy Communities, 1000 N. Alameda Street, Los Angeles, California 90012. The Association for Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health and California Nurse Midwives Association - Los Angeles Chapter will be hosting the 4th Annual Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative Symposium - Protecting the MotherBaby-Dyad: Innovation in Maternity Care (A Conference for Perinatal Professionals).
This conference encourages maternity care practices, practitioners and facilities to implement the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MFCI) Developed by The Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS) (http://motherfriendly.org) in the hospital, clinic and community setting. Local and global leaders in the fields of medicine, midwifery, nursing, doula care and public health are joining together over two days to underscore the vital need for perinatal professionals to work together to improve maternity care and achieve better outcomes for mothers and babies in Los Angeles County. Currently the national cesarean section rate is 35%, and maternal deaths are up, which concerns many medical professionals and parents.
“Given our highly trained medical experts and the technology we have, we could have much better results for moms and babies for the money we spend,” said Cordelia Hanna-Cheruiyot, MPH, Executive Director of The Association for Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health, the co-sponsor of the conference.
“We must rethink whether our current approach to maternity care is working and whether there might be other factors at work that contribute to our disparities in maternal and infant health. This conference seeks to bring together those concerned with pregnant women and newborns who are not normally at the same table to look for new and innovative approaches to improving birth outcomes.” said Mrs. Hanna-Cheruiyot, who has a Masters in Public Health and is a Perinatal Health Educator.
Topics covered will be “Maternity Care in Transformation” by Dr. Christine H. Morton, Ph.D., Research Sociologist and Program Manager for the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative based at Stanford University; a screening of the film “Freedom for Birth: The Mother’s Revolution”; and a presentation on “Informed Consent and Refusal in Maternity Care as a Human Right” with Dr. Laila Al Maryati, MD, FACOG, a well-known expert on Islamic women’s rights and obstetrician-gynecologist, and Hermine Hayes-Klein, JD, from Human Rights in Childbirth. Also, there will be a videocast live from Australia on “Undisturbed Birth: Nature’s Blueprint for Safety Ease and Pleasure” with Dr. Sarah Buckley, MB, ChB, Dip Obst, who is the author of a bestselling book Gentle Birth, Gentle Mothering: A Doctor’s Guide to Natural Childbirth and Gentle Early Parenting Choices,
The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MFCI) is an evidence-based recommendation created by consensus by leading maternity care associations in order to improve maternity care costs, improve birth outcomes and increase quality of maternity care.
