500 Volunteers from Wilton Interfaith Action Group's Ten Wilton Faith Institutions, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Will Package 110,000 Meals for the World’s Hungry
Wilton, CT (PRWEB) October 25, 2013 -- Stop Hunger Now and the Wilton Interfaith Action Group (Wi-ACT) are joining forces in the fight against hunger. More than 500 volunteers from Wi-ACT’s ten Wilton Faith Institutions, Christian, Jewish, and Muslim will package 110,000 meals for the world’s hungry on October 26, 2013 at the Wepco Church Complex at 36 New Canaan Road, Wilton, CT, from 9:00AM – 5:00PM. Stop Hunger Now meal packaging events are a volunteer-based program that coordinates the streamlined packaging of highly nutritious dehydrated meals comprised of rice, soy, vegetables, flavoring, and 21 essential vitamins and minerals.
“Wi-ACT’s volunteers love working together – and especially on projects of this sort that have very visible impact,” says Wi- ACT’s Steering Committee Chair, Steve Hudspeth. “The energy on the packaging floor is extraordinary. Last year, we packaged 101,000 meals, and this year we are aiming for 110,000. Stop Hunger Now gives us an experience that we all can share in together on the same day, working side-by-side, and have a lot of fun.”
According to Wi-ACT’S Treasurer Don Weber, Wi-ACT itself is well organized with leaders for each phase of the operation. “Our faith institution members also have highly energized congregations that really get into the work and enjoy working together as families as well as with congregants from their own and other faith institutions,” he says. “The goal of Wi-ACT is to experience together the joy and fulfillment of living out what our faiths profess as a guiding principle: caring for others with compassion and energy, wisdom and insight. Stop Hunger Now lets us do that fully, which is why this is Wi-ACT’s third year of SHN meal-packaging.”
Around the world, more than 868 million people lack adequate food and more than 25,000 die each day from hunger-related illnesses. Stop Hunger Now operates meal packaging locations in 17 cities throughout the U.S. and international locations in South Africa and Malaysia. Four new locations are slated to open in 2013 including: Houston, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Italy. More than 250,000 volunteers from corporations, churches, schools and civic organizations have packaged Stop Hunger Now meals.
Founded in 1998, Stop Hunger Now has delivered aid and disaster relief supplies in the form of food, medical supplies, clothing, school supplies, and more to thousands of disaster victims and other hungry and vulnerable people in 65 countries.
