5 Odd Breast Implant Facts You Probably Didn’t Know
New York, NY (PRWEB) July 22, 2014 -- Curious Facts About Breast Implants
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States, and continues to increase in popularity. Earlier this year, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reported that the number of breast augmentation procedures performed in 2013 rose 1 percent from the previous year.
Given the popularity of breast augmentation surgery, it is no surprise that most individuals know that breast implants are used during the procedure to enhance the size of the breasts. They may also know that breast implants are comprised of a silicone outer shell and either a saline solution or silicone gel filling material. However, there are a number of curious facts about breast implants that most individuals would never know — until now. Dr. Joshua A. Greenwald shares the following five odd facts about breast implants:
#1: Weight gain occurs with breast implants. It makes sense that the larger the size of the breast implants, the more weight a patient gains once they are inserted during surgery. However, the amount of weight gained with breast implants is not that significant. One implant filled with 450 cubic centimeters (cc) of saline weighs about 1.3 pounds, not including the weight of the outer shell, which weighs about 20 grams.
#2: Some implants glow in the dark. Saline breast implants tend to glow in the dark more than silicone-gel implants. Placing a flashlight next to or underneath the breast implants will prove this odd fact!
#3: Smart chips are implanted in some breast implants. Although the breast implants available in the United States do not include smart chips, newer-generation implants available outside the U.S. contain VeriTeQ's microchip called "Q Inside." The microchip is heat resistant and includes pertinent information such as the serial number, manufacturer name, date of manufacture and other useful data.
#4: Breast implants can be considered vegan. In the past, breast implants were filled with a non-vegan oil designed to be as safe for the body to absorb in case of a leak as saline solution (sterile saltwater) is. However, the oil-filled implants had too many disadvantages, and clinical trials involving those types of implants were halted in the U.S. The implants available in the U.S. these days are considered vegan.
#5: Certain individuals can write off breast implants as tax deductions. The United States Tax Court ruled that individuals in certain professions, including exotic dancers, cocktail waitresses and those in the adult entertainment industry can write off the expense of breast implants as tax deductions.
