5 Tips to make Summer Reading Count
Miami, FL (PRWEB) June 01, 2016 -- School is out! Summer Vacation doesn’t mean a break from learning. Read Conmigo, the award-winning bilingual literacy campaign sponsored by Infinity Auto Insurance, helps parents and teachers promote learning year-round by providing clever books and engaging activities in English and Spanish.
According to the National Summer Learning Association (NSLA), “a strong body of research shows that, without practice, students lose reading skills during the summer months and children from low-income families lose the most.” As noted in a recent research brief, “summer learning shortfall experienced by low-income children over the elementary grades has consequences that reverberate throughout children’s schooling, and can impact whether a child ultimately earns a high school diploma and continues on to college (Alexander, Entwisle, & Olson, 2007a).”
“By supplying parents with free books and activities, Read Conmigo works to turn the ‘Summer Slide’ into a learning opportunity,” said Jim Gober, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Infinity Property and Casualty Corporation, the parent company of Infinity Auto Insurance. “Our goal is to help parents promote positive reading habits and maintain grade-level or better skills year-round.”
Families can encourage young readers in a variety of different ways. Five fun and effective tips to reading with children and encouraging a love of reading this summer include:
1. Make reading a habit by taking time to read with your child every day. Even 15 to 20 minutes can have a huge impact.
2. Set a good example by reading in front of your children.
3. Establish a consistent time each day for reading, and make reading with you something to which your kids can look forward.
4. Take a field trip to your local library and check out the different activities available.
5. Connect reading with summer activities. For example, if you are going on vacation, pick a book about your destination.
Read Conmigo hosts one of the nation’s few completely bilingual online libraries, and includes free downloadable books compatible with computers, tablets and smartphones. Parents, guardians and teachers can visit the Read Conmigo website, too, for a variety of activities that promote bilingual literacy. Each story also includes a set of comprehension questions that allow for an exchange of ideas and discussion between adults and children.
There is even a Read Conmigo mobile app with options like Read-on-My-Own for more advanced readers and Read-to-Me with word highlighting to help young readers. Sound effects, movement and activities will engage and entertain families for hours.
