5th Annual National Voter Registration Day Aims to Ensure Every Eligible Citizen Is Registered To Vote For 2016 Election
Portland, OR (PRWEB) August 25, 2016 -- National Voter Registration Day, the largest one-day effort to register voters in the US, has partnered with more than 2,500 organizations across the country to implement grassroots voter registration programs on September 27, 2016 in an effort to ensure every eligible voter has an opportunity to register and vote in the 2016 election.
“Whether you are voting on a local school issue or the national presidential election, registering to vote is the first step to ensuring your voice is heard in this important election year,” explains Matt Singer, Executive Director of the Bus Federation and founder of National Voter Registration Day. “Over the past five years, we have seen thousands of civic groups, non-profits, government agencies, schools and community groups collaborate to reach out to people at libraries, transit stops, high schools, supermarkets, gyms, new citizen ceremonies, and many other locations to ensure everyone in this country has an equal opportunity to register and to vote in this year’s elections.”
This single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts is celebrated on the fourth Tuesday of September annually and serves as a reminder to register to vote if you are eligible, and to check your existing registration to ensure it is accurate. More than 2,500 organizations are dedicated to implementing over 600 registration events on National Voter Registration Day September 27, such as:
• Chicago, IL: Chicago Votes at Daley Plaza with music, food and registration booths
• New York, NY: NYC Votes and ShoBoy of AMP 92.3 radio host a "Party with a Purpose" National Voter Registration Day party with performances and a live DJ at the Lincoln Center
• Los Angeles: Associated Students, Inc. at Cal State LA with Campus DJs and local artists headlining at the main walkway
National Voter Registration Day was founded in 2012 after six million Americans were unable to vote in the 2008 election as a result of missing registration deadlines or not knowing how to register. On August 6, 2015, President Obama announced the White House’s official support of National Voter Registration Day, joining with state election officials of the nonpartisan National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) that has been championing the holiday since 2012.
National Voter Registration Day is led by a diverse, non-partisan group including the League of Women Voters, Bus Federation, Rock the Vote, Voto Latino, Institute for Asian Pacific American Leadership and Advancement (IAPALA), Fair Elections Legal Network, Nonprofit VOTE, former Elections Administrator Tammy Patrick, Secretary of State John Merrill (R- AL) and Secretary of State Steve Simon (D -MN). Also lending their support to the day include Twitter, Tumblr, MTV, HeadCount, Etsy and Independent Journal Review.
