5TH Annual University of North Texas Recovery Conference Hosts Eminent Speakers
Denton, Texas (PRWEB) March 16, 2017 -- Life of Purpose Treatment and The Office of Substance Misuse and Mental Health Recovery Research are excited to announce the University of North Texas Recovery Conference will be held for its fifth consecutive year featuring eminent speakers. The Recovery Conference is a national two-day event that brings together behavioral health professionals, educators, researchers, students and industry leaders. Held in conjunction with National Recovery Month, the conference will take place September 20 and 21, 2017 at the University of North Texas.
This event is an opportunity to engage with powerhouse speakers and exhibitors from renowned mental health and substance misuse organizations and treatment providers. To kick-off the conference, a VIP dinner will be held on the 19th to welcome speakers and conference attendees.
“We are extremely excited and grateful to announce the continuation and expansion of this conference,” stated Andrew Burki, MSW, Founder and CEO of Life of Purpose Treatment. “Last year, a group of top tier providers came together in a truly unprecedented way to support what, at the time, was a both unique and innovative way to structure a conference within the substance use disorder field,” he continued. “The very idea that an event of this nature could be held with the entirety of its proceeds going to a university to fund recovery research hadn’t only not been done before, it hadn’t even been thought of. The fact that the best researchers in the world are coming from Harvard and Vanderbilt, among other places, to present at this year’s conference is a reflection of the growing support to expand the field at the highest levels.”
The conference begins on Wednesday, September 20 with a keynote presentation by author, Noah Levine. He is a founding teacher and author of Dharma Punx, Against the Stream, The Heart of the Revolution, and Refuge Recovery. Mr. Levine is also a Buddhist teacher and counselor. He has created a Buddhist approach to addiction recovery called Refuge Recovery.
“I am really excited about UNT’s 5th Recovery Conference,” said Linda Holloway, chair of UNT’s Department of Disability and Addiction Rehabilitation. “The event is going to be stimulating and informative! Initiated by students in recovery, it has grown from a small conference with primarily local speakers to a conference with more than 250 attendees featuring leading recovery researchers and advocates. The conference is unique in that it brings together researchers, clinicians, and students in an effort to infuse evidence-based practice into the field. We are delighted to have Dr. Kelly of the Harvard Recovery Research Institute and Dr. Finch from the Peabody School at Vanderbilt to be keynote speakers this year. Additionally, all profits from the conference will be used to fund research conducted by the UNT Office of Substance Misuse and Mental Health Recovery Research.”
Day two begins with a keynote presentation by award-winning addiction recovery researcher, John F. Kelly, Ph.D., ABPP. He is the Elizabeth R. Spallin Associate Professor of Psychiatry in Addiction Medicine at Harvard Medical School, the first endowed professor in addiction medicine at Harvard. Dr. Kelly is also the founder and director of the Recovery Research Institute at the Massachusetts General Hospital.
The conference will close with a keynote presentation by Vanderbilt University’s Andrew Finch, Ph.D. He is the Associate Professor of the Department of Human and Organizational Development at Vanderbilt. Dr. Finch’s research interests include the role of schools as continuing care for substance use disorders.
The conference features expert speakers and sponsors from all over the United States traveling to Denton, Texas. Life of Purpose Treatment returns this year as conference co-host.
Proceeds from the 5th Annual Recovery Conference will benefit the Office of Substance Misuse and Mental Health Recovery Research. For more information about the conference, please visit: https://recoveryresearch.unt.edu.
