ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco Celebrates 30 Years in the Mission with Batizado Cultural Performance & Master Artist Workshop Series
Event Features Prominent Female Guest Artists from Brazil and the U.S
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 11, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco (ACSF), the Bay Area's first non-profit organization dedicated to recovering, preserving, and promoting Afro-Brazilian arts and culture, will mark 30 years in the Mission neighborhood with its annual Batizado Graduation Ceremony and Performance on October 23 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. at Potrero del Sol Park located at Potrero Ave and 25th Street in San Francisco. This outdoor performance is free and family-friendly so bring a picnic and come experience Brazilian arts!
In this traditional Capoeira ceremony, new students are initiated into the world of Capoeira by playing with a master-level artist, and continuing students may receive a new cord (like a karate belt) in recognition of their growth. The ceremony is complemented by performances from top-level guest artists from Brazil and throughout the US including ACSF's company performers.
Preceding the event, ACSF will host workshops led by special guests Mestranda Gigi and Mestre Morcego from Rio de Janeiro, both highly accomplished capoeiristas and top leaders of the international organization of ABADÁ-Capoeira.
This multigenerational event provides an unparalleled opportunity for ACSF's community to gather with guest master capoeiristas from ABADÁ Brazil and North America for intensive learning through workshops, lectures, performance, and ceremony.
This year's event will also kick off the end of the year fundraising campaign. As a non-profit, ACSF has been serving the community since 1991, providing free arts education programs, performances, and year-round classes in martial arts, dance, and music. ACSF's reduced or no- cost programs provided at its Mission District Capoeira Arts Center and in local schools bring engaging cultural arts education to thousands of youth in the Mission District and beyond. To date, youth programs have served more than 20,000 children and teens, the majority of whom are low-income San Francisco residents.
"In this changing city, after 30 years, we are fortunate to still be here and thriving as one of the last non-profit arts centers in San Francisco's Mission District," said Marcia Treidler, a.k.a. Mestra Cigarra, Artistic Director of ACSF. "Cultural centers are the binding glue of the community of which we are all a part. ACSF provides an outlet for all walks of life to engage with others, celebrate diversity, and learn about Afro-Brazilian culture. Participants of all ages learn a variety of lessons, not only cultural, like art and dance, but life skills, like confidence and respect. Our students in turn bring these lessons outside our center to help build a stronger community."
The batizado and graduation ceremony is open to the public. For more information about the batizado and workshop series, visit abada.org.
