AddictiveTips Survey Finds 52% Fear AI Might Devalue or Replace Human-Made Music
Halifax, NS (PRWEB) June 29, 2023 -- A new survey from AddictiveTips reveals majority (52%) of individuals fear AI could replace or devalue human-made music, with 44% concerned AI-music will raise ethical issues surrounding artistic ownership.
The generational divide
Participants across Gen Z, Millennial, Gen X, and Boomer generations offered varied perspectives on the topic:
- 53% of Gen Z would still support their favorite musicians even if their voice rights were sold to AI, with 49% in support from Millennials, and 37% from Gen X/Boomers.
- 43% of Gen Z showed interest in exploring new music created through AI even if they did not know the artist, suggesting an openness to embracing AI as a creative tool. Millennials came in at 42% and Gen X/Boomers following at 37%.
Musical copyright and ownership issues emerge
Proper compensation in the music industry has been a longstanding issue, only amplified by adding AI-generated music into the mix. When asked who should be compensated for AI-generated music, AddictiveTips found:
- 39% of respondents across all age groups believe all parties involved should receive compensation, including the label who owns AI-generated voices, and the original voice used to train the technology.
- 27% feel only the voice used to train AI should be compensated.
- 17% believe AI-generated voices should not be compensated at all.
As for concerns around music copyright, 44% of respondents believe that AI-music could lead to ethical issues surrounding ownership of art. However, 31% still feel it could lead to a surge in creativity — showing that there are a number of ethical considerations that will come into play with this new era of music. This perspective is shared with Louis Tompros, Intellectual Property litigator and professor at Harvard Law School, who spoke to the survey's results and offered expert insights on the topic.
Survey Methodology
Survey data was collected through a Pollfish survey of 1,500 individuals aged 16-54+ from the USA, Canada, & UK.
