Allegheny Health Network to Host Public Stop the Bleed® Trainings to Raise Awareness During the Country’s First National Stop the Bleed® Month
PITTSBURGH, Pa. (PRWEB) May 09, 2019 -- In recognition of the country’s first National Stop the Bleed Month, the Allegheny Health Network Trauma Prevention Team will offer free Stop the Bleed® training to the public on Saturdays May 11 and May 25.
The purpose of the nationwide Stop the Bleed® Month campaign is to highlight the importance of Stop the Bleed® training and provide the public with information and education through local fire, EMS, and health care professionals. Free bleeding control basics classes are being offered to the public, furthering the goal of the American College of Surgeons to train everyone in the U.S. about what to do during a bleeding emergency. The Stop the Bleed® campaign was initiated by a federal interagency workgroup convened by the National Security Council Staff, The White House, with a purpose to build national resilience by better preparing the public to save lives by raising awareness of basic actions to stop life threatening bleeding.
“Uncontrolled bleeding, from any cause, can result in death in as quickly as five minutes,” said Allan Philp, MD, AHN trauma surgeon. "Similar to how the general public learns and performs CPR, learning proper bleeding control techniques, including how to use your hands, dressings, and tourniquets, can be life-saving knowledge in an emergency situation. In the event of any situation where an injury occurs, anyone at the scene can act as an immediate responder and save lives if they know what to do.”
AHN’s Stop the Bleed® community trainings are part of this national initiative which aims to train bystanders to be the best first responders to those who are traumatically injured , teaching life-saving skills that can help stop or limit bleeding from a wound until EMS or other first responders arrive. AHN Trauma Centers conduct training in communities across western PA and provide bleeding control kits free of charge to participants, which include tourniquets, pressure dressings, gauze, and gloves.
“Since 2016, we have been able to train over 7,500 people across 16 counties in schools, EMS agencies, fire and police departments, construction companies, municipal buildings, places of worship, community centers, and more,” said Sarah Zelazny, MPH, Trauma Prevention Coordinator for Allegheny General and Forbes Hospitals. “In 2018, we donated over 300 bleeding control kits to the community, and thanks to a recent generous grant, we will be donating an additional 400 this year toward this important community initiative.”

This course is not suitable for children under 12 years old due to the sensitive nature of the subject material. Space is limited. All attendees are entered in a raffle to receive a bleeding control kit containing a tourniquet, clotting gauze, and gloves.
