NEW YORK, May 17, 2021 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Bernadette Miller has published her debut novel, "A House in the Land of Shinar," a remarkable historical novel exploring the link between the Sumerians in ancient Iraq and the beginning of Judaism, based on archaeological evidence mostly unknown to the public.

Set in Saudi Arabia in 3500 B.C., the beloved young daughter of a Bedouin Arab named Tiras is sacrificed to his tribe's imaginary bull-god. Devastated, Tiras grows determined to find a kinder god and save his two sons. Accompanied by his donkey, Tiras sets out for the sophisticated non-Arab land of Sumer, crossing the dangerous Nefud Desert. In Sumer, he hopes to discover a faith that will bring peace and prosperity to his family and his tribe. After numerous adventures, he returns to the desert with a new religion—the roots of Judaism. However, Tiras struggles to persuade his suspicious tribe to accept the new, unseen god. Furthermore, he must face the consequences of his affair with a Sumerian woman whom he had abandoned. Only time will tell whether Tiras can help his people find meaning in their lives and establish themselves in their own land.

"Many years ago, I read a book by archaeologist Andre Parrot and I became intrigued by the connection between some Bible stories and the Sumerians in southern Iraq," said Miller. "Especially those living in the city-state of Ur that is also mentioned in Genesis. Excited by the archaeological discoveries, I researched further and eventually published a short story that later inspired me to write my novel."

Bernadette Miller earned her Bachelor of Arts degree at Maryland University and studied fiction writing at New York University and the New School for Social Research. Her short stories have been published in over 40 literary magazines and she read one of her published stories on television's Manhattan Neighborhood Network.
