Angela Dufresne Makes a Scene at Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (PRWEB) September 20, 2018 -- Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is proud to present "Angela Dufresne: Making a Scene," a major museum exhibition comprising of more than thirty paintings and video works spanning nearly a decade, with an opening reception taking place Thursday, September 20, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. The artist will be in attendance, signing exhibition catalogues from 6:30-7:00 p.m., following a performance by the Chamber Ensemble of Heartland Men’s Chorus.
The exhibition will remain on view through January 6, 2019.
Focusing on her signature depictions of modern life, "Angela Dufresne: Making a Scene" compositionally connects us to the history of painting and cinema, and includes a catalogue of new essays produced exclusively for the exhibition.
Curated by Kemper Museum’s Erin Dziedzic, director of curatorial affairs, the exhibition provides an opportunity to explore contemporary painting through an important lens: “Dufresne's critical eye brings the past into the present: the settings, historical story lines, and array of subjects she employs align with a montage sensibility in which different imagery from carefully selected moments in visual culture coalesce,” states Dziedzic.
“Dufresne’s paintings and videos provide a constant link to motion, motion picture, and scene,” continued Dziedzic. “They remark on the immediacy of today, engaging with the chaotic, sensual, reflective, and changing aspects of how we got here. By acknowledging points of representation in our past, she critically and openly discusses this era and generation.”
Angela Dufresne was raised in Olathe, Kansas, and graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1991. Dufresne’s paintings are part of the Kemper Museum Permanent Collection and exemplify the Museum’s celebration of the history of the gesture in modern and contemporary art. Dufresne is Associate Professor of painting at Rhode Island School of Design, and lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Janovy, author of "No Place Like Home: Lessons in Activism from LGBT Kansas" (Thursday, October 4); a visiting scholar talk with Melissa Ragona, author of "Blink, Cut, Surrender: Angela Dufresne’s Poltergeist," featured in the exhibition catalogue produced in conjunction with this exhibition; and a three-part film screening of features which had a major impact on the artist, including "Opening Night" (Thursday, October 25), "Mamma Roma" (Thursday, November 8), and "Gloria" (Thursday, December 6).
Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is open 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Tuesday–Wednesday; 10:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m., Thursday and Friday; and 10:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., Saturday and Sunday.
