Boundless Immigration Launches Public Charge Risk Estimator
Interactive Tool Helps Immigrants Estimate Their Risk of Green Card Denial Under New Public Charge Rule
SEATTLE, Oct. 14, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Today, Boundless Immigration announced the launch of its Public Charge Risk Estimator. Developed in partnership with UnidosUS, the largest Latino non-profit advocacy organization in the U.S., the Public Charge Risk Estimator simulates the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) and State Department public charge test to help green card applicants estimate their risk of denial under the new public charge rule.
The public charge rule, designed to reduce legal immigration, is expected to impact more than one million green card applicants within the United States each year, plus millions more abroad. Under the new rule, the U.S. Government will judge green card applicants based on a complex set of criteria, such as medical history, credit score, English proficiency, and use of public benefits, to determine whether they are likely to rely on government support. This will effectively double the minimum income required for green card eligibility, which could lead to over 50 percent of all family-based green card applications being denied. Moreover, the rule creates uncertainty for millions of current green card holders.
"This rule is another example of the government adding unnecessary complexity into the immigration system in order to dissuade families from applying legally due to the significant new burden." said Boundless CEO, Xiao Wang. "We developed the Public Charge Risk Estimator to help individual immigrants determine whether and how they are likely to be impacted by the new criteria."
"Reports have confirmed that immigrants do not use excessive public benefits, so this policy is a solution to a problem that doesn't actually exist. While the vast majority of visa applicants are likely not affected by the rule, there is understandable confusion among the Latino community," said UnidosUS Senior Immigration Legislative Analyst, Laura Vazquez. "This tool is a practical, accessible way for immigrants to determine if they need legal assistance in applying for a green card."
On October 11, the Trump administration's "public charge" rule was hit with a temporary injunction preventing the policy from going into effect on October 15 as originally proposed.
