The BOXX Project has been highly anticipated by the Automotive world. With only 28 models know to have been ever produced and just 19 known to still exist, the Brubaker Box was an auto industry unicorn. Car and Driver premiered the Brubaker Box on their cover in March of 1972 and shortly thereafter it was gone. Lost to history.
DRIVEN.co partners Tomo Bullum and Dale Davis hunt down vehicles of the past and the Brubaker Box was on the top of their list. Since they were teens.
The first Box came out of hiding in June 2018. It had languished, as an unbuilt kit, in long term storage for some 29 years.
In January of 2019 lightning struck again when a Box surfaced in Florida. DRIVEN.co found themselves immediately on a plane to purchase the Box where it had sat in a swamp for some 25 years. Affectionately named the "Swamp Box", crowds gathered whenever the car was shown. Eventually, it was deduced that the Swamp Box was actually Brubaker Box #1, the cover car.
Bullum commented "We could easily restore the Boxes we have and keep them or see them go into private collections. But after hearing so many people express an interest owning a BOXX, we realized that many automobile aficionados desired to own them."
Davis added "The new electric skateboard platforms are a natural fit for BOXX. And we're hearing from the 4X4 guys too."
