CHICAGO, May 2, 2019 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Buona, The Original Italian Beef, today announced its National Beef Month 2019 celebrations in Chicago. Italian beef lovers are encouraged to join festivities happening at Montrose Harbor and at Buona restaurants across Chicagoland.
On Saturday, May 18, Buona and Al's Beef invite beef fans to work up an appetite during the Italian Beef 5K and Kids Dash at Montrose Harbor. The walk/run starts and ends on the paths at Montrose Harbor, 601 W Montrose Avenue, at 9 a.m. Participants will receive a Dri-FIT shirt and medal, along with fun swag they can "sink their teeth into," including a sample Italian sausage on the course and their choice of an Italian beef sandwich from Al's Beef or Buona at the finish line.
Following the race, awards will be given to the top three overall male and female finishers, as well as the top three runners in each age group, by gender, for participants in the 5K run. Additionally, kids aged 12 and younger can participate in a half-mile walk/run called Kids Dash. Participants in Kids Dash will receive a race bib, medal and an Italian beef sandwich at the finish line.
Proceeds from the Italian Beef 5K will go to JDRF, an organization that funds type 1 diabetes research and advocates for regulation favorable to medical research and that makes it easier to market new medical devices.

"Italian beef is a quintessential Chicago food, and we couldn't think of a better time to celebrate it than during National Beef Month," said second-generation owner, Joe Buonavolanto, Jr. "With the Italian Beef 5K and National Italian Beef Day, we're able to bring the celebration to Italian beef fans in the city and the suburbs in unique and entertaining ways."
May won't be the only time Italian Beef is celebrated in Chicago this year. Buona and several other local Italian beef providers plan to host the 2nd Annual Italian Beef Fest later this summer. Further details about the fest will be made available in the coming weeks.
About Buona Restaurants
The first Buona restaurant began serving Chicago's original Italian beef in Berwyn, Ill. in 1981. The Official Italian Beef of the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox, Buona has direct ties to the origination of Chicago's iconic Italian beef sandwich, which they helped bring into the national spotlight by spearheading the creation of National Italian Beef Day. Founded by Buonavolanto patriarch Joe Buonavolanto, Sr., the group is the last standing 100 percent family-owned Italian beef chain. Buona restaurants feature a perfect blend of old-school indulgence and next-generation menu choices – made with a focus on fresh, scratch-made food. While the menu has expanded, the original Italian beef recipe has not been compromised – for the three generations of Buonavolantos who are active in the company, compromise and quality are never uttered in the same breath.
Buona's Italian beef sandwich has won several awards and accolades since its inception, including USA TODAY's 10Best, The Chicago Tribune's Best Italian Beef in Chicago, Steve Dolinsky's Essential Italian Beef Joints in Chicago(land), Eater's 11 Essential Chicago Italian Beef Restaurants, Berwyn's Best, West Suburban Living's Best of the West, The Daily Herald's Reader's Choice Award. Buona retail products are now sold at Target, Jewel, Mariano's, Aldi and Peapod.
