Buyers Flea Market Celebrates First Year Anniversary of Reopening Business
CHICAGO (PRWEB) August 29, 2018 -- After a devastating fire burned the foundation of Buyers Flea Market to the ground in 2016, the business will be celebrating its first-year anniversary in its new space this September.
The 38-year-old popular market, known for its indoor and covered outdoor settings, rooftop parking and weekend shopping, is home to about 300-plus vendors who sell both new and used Items such as clothing, shoes, home décor and party decorations. Customers can also find stalls offering shoe repair, hair styling services and fresh foods. The busiest times are September through May and on holidays.
Greg Morand, president and general manager, said the five-alarm fire was a total loss for the market’s owners and the vendors. While the market had insurance coverage, many of the vendors did not. Assessing the damage, Leonard Kraus, the market’s founder and Morand’s father-in-law, decided to move forward.
“He wanted to rebuild for his family and for his customer base and his vendors who have supported him throughout the years,” said Morand who explained that the rebuilding process was an 18-month project. “He wanted to be sure his legacy was left to his family and to his vendors to reopen and put everybody back in business.”
The fire could not damage the strong personal connections between customers and vendors which have contributed to the market’s success. Throughout the year, the market attracts an average of 8,000 to 12,000 visitors.
“We have a strong following based on the years that we’ve been in business,” Morand said. “We do a lot of personalized service; we’re always attentive to the customers and vendors. Over the years, we heard a lot of positive comments of how we’ve treated them. As a business, you have to listen to what people say.”
During the rebuilding period, some customers may not know that the market is operating. Morand wants Chicagoland to know that its doors are open every weekend.
“In 38 years, we’ve had 25 million-plus people come through this facility,” he said. ‘We’ll have people who will come in and say ‘I haven’t been here in 10 years and you’re still here.’”
